This is undoubtedly one of the best sitcoms we've seen in years.

Summary:

  • Hacks is one of the best sitcoms of recent years with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and actress Jean Smart in the main role.
  • The show tells the story of a comedian at the end of her career who should work with a young comedy writer to revive her popularity.
  • The basic idea of the show about a female comedian is reminiscent of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but Hacks goes its own way.
  • There are currently two seasons of Hacks available on Max, with a third season scheduled for spring 2024.

It is no secret to those who follow HBO shows that Jean Smart is currently enjoying a career renaissance, having shone as the mother of Kate Winslet 's character in Mare of Easttown, as the head of the Gerhardt crime family in the second season of Fargo, and as an aging superhero named Silk Spectre in Watchmen.

After all these impressive but supporting roles, Smart finally landed the lead. And the starring role is Deborah Vance in Hacks, a show about a comedian in the twilight of her career.

What is Hacks About?

Deborah Vance, a Las Vegas stand-up legend, an obscenely rich lady who is not used to taking anyone's feelings into consideration, is in the twilight of her career.

Her manager Jimmy rushes to the rescue, believing that the diva could use a little refreshment in her jokes. 25-year-old comedy writer Ava, a bisexual zoomer who became a victim of cancel culture after tweeting about a right-wing politician and his gay son, is sent from Los Angeles to help Deborah.

Ava is not eager to work for a comedian who has been joking about men not putting the toilet seat down for decades and who once burned down the house of her unfaithful husband.

Hacks Is Different from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, But That’s a Good Thing

It's easy to blame the creators of Hacks for the lack of new ideas – especially if you don't watch the show, but judge it by the synopsis. The question immediately comes to mind – do we really need another show about a female comedian, as if The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel wasn't enough?

Yes, it's easy to accuse the creators of yet another comedy about a female comedian of using the already successful formula. Except for one thing – Hacks is one of the best sitcoms in recent years. And it's official – Hacks has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first couple episodes of Hacks are quite prone to clichés and uneven pacing, but once the show picks up speed, there's no stopping it. And you won't be able to tear yourself away from the screen for 18 episodes of the two seasons of Hacks.

The show has two full seasons, and the third is already on the way – it does not have an exact release date yet, but there is a release window – Season 3 of Hacks is scheduled to come to Max in the spring of 2024.
