Frankly, it was no surprise, because the end of season 3 was a major hint, but the fans are still disappointed that Max canceled the show.

One of my TV guilty pleasures is watching every teen drama there is. Yes, I am not a high school student, so what? It doesn't make the stories explored in these types of shows any less relatable or compelling. And one of my recent favorites was Max's series The Sex Lives of College Girls.

The show premiered in 2021, created by a team that included Mindy Kaling, making it a must-watch for her fans, at least. The show has a rather simple premise, which is actually easy to understand from the title. It follows a group of girls who soon become friends as they start a new chapter of their lives at college and dive into the lifestyles of sexually free people.

The Sex Lives of College Girls Was One of Max’s Most Unique Shows

The Sex Lives of College Girls is a standout because it doesn't shy away from showing the young female gaze on such a controversial topic as sex. It's funny that some viewers were skeptical of this POV and the number of casual hookups the girls had.

But it seems they missed the point: it's not a show about the girls trying to find the love of their lives, it's about them trying to find out everything about themselves.

The show lasted for three seasons and at the end of season 3 there were rumors that it would not be greenlit any further. Unfortunately, Max recently proved them right by making a statement that the show was canceled and that season 4 would not be happening on the platform.

Anyone who caught the end of season 3 saw this coming because every story was kind of properly wrapped up (probably in case it doesn't continue in another season), but still, the cancellation is frustrating to me personally because, frankly, the market for college-based shows exploring this particular premise isn't that big.

Especially since the ratings and views of The Sex Lives of College Girls on Max were quite impressive, with only Season 3 lagging a bit behind.

My Take on Why the Show Was Canceled (And What the Future Holds)

The Sex Lives of College Girls seemed to suffer the fate that typically awaits streaming series after three seasons, when it's time to renew contracts.

Normally, new contracts mean an increase in pay for the cast, and usually by that time they're already much more popular than they were before the show. And, of course, the streamers are not so keen on that idea unless the show is a big draw or an awards contender.

However, while there's still hope that some other streaming platforms will pick up the show and continue to expand the universe set at Essex College in Vermont, even the hardcore fans of the teen drama seem to have accepted its fate after all. And the fact that the latest season ended on such a heartfelt note makes it easier to say goodbye to the beloved series.
