Jeremy Renner's prison-town drama just landed on Netflix, and if you start now, you have a very specific amount of homework.

Good news if you've been meaning to get into Mayor of Kingstown but refused to pay for one more streamer: since October 5, 2026, all four seasons have been on Netflix in the US and most international markets, part of a licensing deal with Paramount that, per Forbes, also brought over SEAL Team and Watson. Less good news: that's 40 episodes, and the fifth and final season isn't part of the deal. It's staying on Paramount+.

So when does season 5 actually come out?

Paramount hasn't said. The streamer's own season 5 guide still lists the date as unannounced, and there's no trailer. Here's what we can pin down:

  • It's not October. Paramount+'s October slate belongs to Tulsa King season 4 (October 16) and Dexter: Resurrection season 2 (October 30).
  • The episodes exist. Filming started in Pittsburgh on March 13, 2026, and Renner announced the wrap on Instagram over the summer.
  • There's no pattern to lean on. Season 1 premiered in November 2021, season 2 in January 2023, season 3 in June 2024, and season 4 on October 26, 2025.
  • But there is a precedent. In fall 2025, Tulsa King went first and Kingstown followed about five weeks later. If Paramount repeats that stagger, season 5 lands in late November or December 2026. If it doesn't, early 2027 is the next most likely window.

Your homework

Forty episodes, ten per season, running anywhere from about 35 minutes to over an hour each. Budget north of 30 hours. Season 5 is shorter, at eight episodes instead of ten.

Renner plays Mike McLusky, who inherits the job of unofficial "mayor" of Kingstown, Michigan, a town whose main industry is prisons, after his brother is killed in the very first episode. Edie Falco joined in season 4. (Season 4 spoiler ahead, so skip this paragraph if you're still on episode one.) Season 5 brings in David Morse as FBI agent Russell Hardy, who arrives after the murder of Mike's sister-in-law Tracy. The star has been very subtle about what comes next:

"No one is safe this season. I mean Nobody!"

— Jeremy Renner, on Instagram

Netflix gets the four seasons. Paramount+ keeps the ending.

Ending early, sort of

Paramount renewed the show in January 2026 and called it the final season in the same announcement. That's not how the show's creators described the plan back when they were still talking about the long game:

"[Sheridan] has an ending for it in Season 7."

— Hugh Dillon, co-creator, to Screen Rant

Dillon added that Sheridan had worked out that ending some 15 years earlier. Instead, the show wraps two seasons short of it. Mayor of Kingstown was never a ratings monster by Sheridan standards, trailing Lioness and Landman on Nielsen, and Sheridan's TV deal moves to NBCUniversal in 2029.

Renner, for one, hasn't fully accepted the word "final." Announcing the start of filming, he called it the fifth and perhaps final season, then added, "We'll see about that."
