Megalopolis Pulled from U.S. Streaming After Huge Box Office Bomb, Here’s Why

The list of the biggest box office bombers of 2024 has Coppola’s Megalopolis as one of its top positions, but the director doesn’t want the movie to arrive on streaming anyway — and for a pretty weird reason.
Francis Ford Coppola’s epic sci-fi drama Megalopolis bombed in the most epic way possible in theatres last year, and even the streaming release isn’t going to help the movie with at least a couple of thousand dollars grossed.
Boasting of an all-star cast that includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza and many more, Megalopolis was one of the biggest box office flops with $14 million earned against its whopping budget of around $130 million.
Released in theatres across the world back in September, the movie has been long stored on streaming platforms for now, but not in the US anymore — for a reason which might seem pointless even to Coppola’s longtime fans.
Francis Ford Coppola Doesn’t Want Megalopolis on Small Screens
Apparently, the director’s grandest and most expensive work to-date wasn’t meant to be on streaming anyway.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coppola demanded that Megalopolis be removed from the platforms it was released on.
“He wants it to play in theaters, the way it was intended”, one of the sources close to Coppola revealed.
However, Megalopolis hasn’t left the big screen yet — the movie is reportedly travelling across the US with its helmer who recently had a sold-out screening in Boston and will soon be heading to Detroit.
Still, it doesn’t seem like something Coppola would make a profit off, especially since Megalopolis’ leading actor Adam Driver once suggested that “there was no talk about how we could make this more commercial”.
Megalopolis Streaming News Is Upsetting for US Fans
Whether some viewers managed to catch the movie in theatres or saw it until it was still available on streaming, many still admitted Coppola’s decision hit hard.
“I enjoyed every second of it. I can't stop thinking about it. I thought about buying it recently but I also assume there will be some kind of special edition that I will want. I feel like I have to watch it again knowing what it's like beforehand. It almost plays like parody on first viewing. I can't stop watching the memes”, Redditor BBDBVAPA revealed in a thread.
“My initial review was “welp that was a movie” but I knew I would buy it on 4K disc soon as it was released because I want to see it again and examine it again. Kinda disappointed that it still hasn’t happened”, WebheadGa added.
“Did i happen to start searching for this movie on literally the same day it was removed from the world of existence? I *need* to see this movie the way I needed to see The Room”, Apprehensive_Cake919 chimed in.
