This movie is one of the most striking representatives of the teen comedies of the 2010s.

If you had to pick the leading actress of the last decade, many would probably name Emma Stone. Playing a variety of characters – from Spider-Man's girlfriend to a girl who dreams of Hollywood – the actress has become a symbol of her time. Emma makes each movie more charming than it could be without her.

Perhaps the first movie that showed viewers the range of the actress' talent was Easy A. Comedies aren't usually used as a showcase of their skills for actors, but Easy A is a very different case.

“It's an absolute show stopping performance from Emma Stone in her first leading role. […] No one who saw that film back in 2010 would have been surprised that she got a Best Actress Oscar before she was 30 and another one before she was 35,” Reddit user faithle55 wrote.

And it’s impossible to argue with that statement.

What is Easy A About?

Will Gluck's Easy A is probably one of the most unconventional teen comedies of the last decade. The movie is a modernized adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel The Scarlet Letter.

The main character is a high school student named Olive, who is subjected to mass slut-shaming after lying to her friend that she lost her virginity.

Will Gluck Turned The Dramatic Story Into a Witty Comedy

Despite the rather complex social topics, Easy A is as light-hearted as possible and largely self-deprecating.

In the novel, Hester Prynne gives birth to a child out of wedlock and experiences a wave of condemnation: the woman is forced to wear the scarlet letter A on her clothes as a mark.

Olive does the same in the movie. With this gesture, however, the girl challenges the society. She proudly walks the halls of her school, refusing to be ashamed and refusing to allow the peers to continue bullying her.

Without unnecessary moralizing, Gluck reflects on puritanism and false stereotypes that can make any society an extremely toxic environment.

Will Gluck's movie could have been a pretty dark drama about how twisted facts ruin the reputation of a pretty smart, if a little insecure, high school girl. However, the well-written script gave us a rare, witty comedy with insanely charming characters.

Easy A Was Emma Stone’s First Major Role

Moreover, it was with this film that Emma Stone's rise to the top of Hollywood began, and it was thanks to this role that La La Land, Birdman, The Favourite and Poor Things, for which the actress won the Oscar she deserved, were ever made. And at least for this we can say a big thank you to Easy A.
