What's here is a crude and sometimes vulgar, yet occasionally very funny, thrill ride.

The production company Brutus Pink is known for the shows Big Mouth and Human Resources. This time, the creators shifted their focus from teenagers to the challenges of adulthood.

The first season of Mating Season is now on Netflix – the show is funny, cheeky, and very frank, but there's a catch.

What Is 'Mating Season' About?

The main characters are four animals. Ray is a loving raccoon; Josh is a bear who was recently dumped by his wife; Penelope the fox can't bring herself to date; and Fawn the deer is constantly unlucky in love.

This close-knit group of animals gathers at a bar and shares stories of their romantic adventures.

'Mating Season' Is a Spiritual Successor to 'Big Mouth', but It Might Have a Few Too Many Below-The-Belt Jokes

Big Mouth was a raunchy yet believable animation about teenagers exploring their bodies. It dispelled the embarrassment and fear often associated with puberty. With its crude humor, absurd situations, and macabre fantasies, it lifted the taboo on topics rarely discussed openly.

Mating Season does not have the same impact. Erotic scenes and excessively obscene language overshadow the underlying message, and the characters deliver punchlines so relentlessly that the show never lets up.

'Mating Season' Is a Very Basic Sitcom That Is Nothing More Than an Entertainment Show

Mating Season uses humor to alleviate feelings of shame. The comedy comes from puns, hyperbolic imagery, and familiar songs in outrageous contexts, however, the most widely used device is below-the-belt jokes.

Not a single plot arc is executed well: the fox's love story becomes inappropriately convoluted by the end; the raccoon's journey after falling in love with a goose ends before it begins; and the writers even forget about the good-natured bear.

Mating Season is a sitcom in its most basic form. While Big Mouth offered a humorous perspective on taboo subjects, Mating Season turns out to be an entertaining show that brings nothing new to the genre.

When it comes to adult animated series, it's hard to know what to expect. The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers are cheeky satires; Family Guy is a raunchy thrill ride, and Brutus Pink's projects are distinguished by a crude frankness that won't appeal to everyone.

The writers still nail the dark humor, however, in the long run, the project will lack a fresh idea that brings each joke together into a coherent composition.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Mating Season'?

  • Mating Season has 67% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 6.5/10.
