'Mission Impossible' Is Cool, but We Need a Sequel to This 91%-Rated Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Gem

Over the past decade, Edge of Tomorrow has become a cult sci-fi action movie, and talk of a sequel hasn't died down. Here's why the chances of an Edge of Tomorrow 2 are higher than ever.
Tom Cruise's journey in the Mission: Impossible franchise recently came to an end with the release of The Final Reckoning, which concluded Ethan Hunt's story.
For almost 30 years, eight Mission: Impossible movies have been released, much to the delight of fans of the action franchise. Meanwhile, viewers of another action gem have been waiting 11 years for a sequel. We are talking about Edge of Tomorrow, a sci-fi flick starring Tom Cruise.
'Edge of Tomorrow' Director Says the Sequel Is Not Dead
With a budget of $178 million, Edge of Tomorrow was not a commercial but critical success. It earned $367 million worldwide and received 91% from critics and 90% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
Talks of a sequel began almost immediately after the movie's release but have yet to come to fruition. In 2024, Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman told Empire magazine that a sequel was still possible:
“No, we keep talking about it. We love that world.”
At the same time, the director mentioned that after a decade, he rewatched Edge of Tomorrow together with Tom Cruise:
“Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago, because I hadn't seen it in 10 years. I was like, 'Wow, that is a really good movie.'”
Tom Cruise's Deal With Warner Bros. Boosts Chances of 'Edge of Tomorrow' Sequel
Additionally, Tom Cruise signed a deal with Warner Bros. last year for the production of original content and franchise movies, and Edge of Tomorrow was also a Warner Bros. production.
Edge of Tomorrow was not a commercial success, but it has gained cult status among sci-fi action fans. This legacy may be reason enough for a sequel to finally be greenlit.
Further increasing the likelihood of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel is the fact that Tom Cruise has finished the main franchise of his career, Mission: Impossible, which had kept him very busy.
Emily Blunt Is Ready to Join 'Edge of Tomorrow 2'
In 2023, Emily Blunt, who played one of the main roles alongside Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, appeared as a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The actress said that she had already read the script for the sequel and mentioned Cruise's busy schedule:
“There was one that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me. I mean, I would love to make it a reality but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission Impossibles does he [Cruise] need.”
Now that we know for sure that Ethan Hunt's journey has ended, the likelihood of a sequel finally being put into production seems higher than ever. All that's left to do is cross our fingers and wait for an official announcement.
