Who is the new kaiju and what happened to Titan X?

On May 1, the tenth and final episode of the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, was released. The episode ended with a major cliffhanger, complete with a fiery surprise.

Here, we explore the significance of the new kaiju and the connection to Back to the Future.

What Are Rifts, and How Did Cate Lure Titan X?

Cate formed a special bond with Titan X, the enormous creature that emerged from the portal alongside Lee. Bill Randa's notes revealed that the women of the settlement near the mysterious shrine had a similar connection – they could hear the kaiju's "song."

This isn't the franchise's first "special" character. Jia from Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire can also communicate with titans. It wouldn't be surprising if Cate encountered her someday.

Thanks to Cate's abilities, the team discovered that Titan X posed no threat. It had simply gotten lost, off its migratory route. The Titan turned out to be female and follows a specific course every few years to lay an egg.

The portal opening during the rescue of Lee caused her to set off prematurely, and Apex's failed attempt to control the monster sent her off course.

Cate's team helped Titan X return to the Axis Mundi. Before leaving, the kaiju touched Cate out of gratitude – as if they were shaking hands.

Do Time Travels Actually Exist?

Time flows differently in the Axis Mundi. Isabel Simmons, the daughter of Apex's founder, wanted to exploit this peculiarity for her own benefit. A sick person can sit out a few weeks in the Axis Mundi and wait for a cure to be discovered on the surface.

Isabel persuaded Kentaro to join her on this mission. Kentaro believed that his father, Hiroshi, could be saved. Hiroshi had been lost in the Axis Mundi, and Kentaro hoped to find his "past" self there.

Lee was able to contact his younger self via radio while he was surviving in the Axis Mundi. The older Lee convinced the younger Lee not to save Keiko prematurely, fearing that interfering with her family's fate would make things worse. In the season finale, the two Lees met through a rift.

The series could feature classic time travel in the spirit of the Back to the Future trilogy. Instead of a DeLorean, however, there's an entire dimension where timelines intersect. Alternatively, the concept could be more complex, involving alternate realities, similar to the MCU.

What Kind of Fire Monster Did Lee Encounter?

At the end of the second season, Lee traveled to Thailand. There, he discovered a fiery, winged kaiju reminiscent of the mythical phoenix on a local volcano. This iconic monster is Rodan.

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Rodan was one of Godzilla's adversaries but ultimately recognized him as the King of the Titans.

In the third season, Isabel and Kentaro will likely try to force Rodan to open a new rift, which will anger the kaiju and create a new threat – Lee must stop them.

Meanwhile, Cate, Keiko, May, and Tim will continue searching for the duo and exploring the world of monsters.

Will There Be a Season 3 of 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters'?

Apple TV has not yet renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters for a third season. The open ending of the second season clearly lays the groundwork for a next chapter. It should delve into Rodan and Isabel's intentions, which received little attention in the second season.

The first season aired from November 2023 to January 2024. The project was renewed three months later, in April. The second season aired from February to May 2026. Assuming similar production schedules, the third season is expected to premiere in spring 2028.
