You might have never thought about it, but this habit actually says a lot about your dog’s natural wit.

Every pet owner knows what it’s like to be stunned by one of their animal’s habits like sleeping in a cute position or seeking attention in the most adorable ways. Some might have even noticed that their dogs often opt for sleeping near the entrance door instead of doing so in their own bed, which is often considered something pretty ordinary.

However, a habit like this proves once again that dogs’ mind functions in a much more strategic way than we’re used to thinking.

Why Does Your Dog Like Sleeping Near the Entrance Door?

The first thing that comes to every dog owner’s mind is that their pet uses this way for training their natural guarding instincts and thus stays near the entrance to be the first to notice a possible danger. This is actually true, since dogs are used to following their natural instincts and tend to protect their community, which is you or your entire family.

Still, there are some other reasons why things like this happen quite frequently. For instance, dogs choose to remain near the entrance door because they see it as a strategically good observation point: usually, you can see several more rooms of the house or apartment from the hall, which is why the dog likely feels relaxed while keeping the situation under its control.

Also, the entrance door is the place that lets some fresh or even cold air in every so often, and the dog sees it as a way to keep itself cool with all that fur it has to wear all year long.

Another possible reason is that the dog sees the entrance door as, well, some kind of entertainment: since the door lets in some noises and smells from the outside, the pet stays close to analyze it all and find out what’s happening in the outer world.

Finally, the dog’s choice to remain near the entrance door can also be a sign of it missing its owner: for instance, if you said goodbye to your dog just before leaving the house, it’s likely that the pet remains in the place where it’s seen you the last time.
