Supernatural treated our nervous systems like a children’s playground, didn’t it?

The Winchester brothers’ adventures lasted for 15 seasons, and not all the storylines were top-notch (especially, looking at them retrospectively). The season 3 plot surrounding Lisa Braeden, Dean’s old flame, and her son Ben is a controversial topic in the Supernatural fandom – some viewers love this glimpse of a normal life, and others hate this whole storyline.

If your memory fails you, Ben looks and behaves a lot like Dean, which is why he initially thinks that he is his biological son (even the timing of Ben’s birth checks out with Dean and Lisa’s one-night stand in 1998).

Sadly, Dean, along with viewers, receives confirmation that Ben isn’t related to Dean – Lisa tells him that she hooked up with a guy she met at a biker bar and got pregnant right after their fling.

Lisa and Ben’s storyline in relation to Dean used to be pretty much hated by Supernatural fans. People wanted to see the Winchesters hunting monsters and saving people and were kind of afraid that their favorite show would be turning into a family drama instead.

As the years passed, many viewers changed their opinion regarding the Braedens’ place in Dean’s life and were even sad to see them go in season 6 for good. Although, at least they didn’t end up dead (like recurring characters on that show usually did).

In retrospective, the whole running joke about Ben being Dean’s son was utterly adorable and added the much-needed lighthearted vibe to the grim story that was Dean’s life at the time (or later, for that matter). Some people still prefer to believe that Ben is Dean’s kid despite what the show’s canon says.

However, the fact that Ben isn’t Dean’s kid is even better than if he was for one simple reason – it further proves Supernatural’s motto that “family don’t end in blood.” Dean really loved both Lisa and Ben and was loved in return. He had a family and a hope for a normal life even if it was just for a moment.
