NBC's Newlyweds premiere date is set: Jamie Lee Curtis co-created the Téa Leoni–Tim Daly comedy and kept one role for herself
An Oscar winner built a sitcom around a couple who already fell in love once on network television — and wrote herself in as the complication.
Newlyweds premieres Friday, October 23, at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC, streaming on Peacock the next day. The multi-camera comedy, co-created by Jamie Lee Curtis and showrunner Gail Lerner, stars Téa Leoni as Jeanie, a free-spirited middle-school science teacher with two teenagers, and Tim Daly as James, a buttoned-up philosophy professor — two people of a certain age who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship and then meet each other's lives. Pamela Fryman, the director behind most of How I Met Your Mother, directs the pilot, which Lerner wrote from a story she and Curtis built together.
The role Curtis kept for herself is the pointed one. She's not playing anyone's charming aunt: Curtis recurs as Claudia, James' ex-wife, the character the trailer bills as the marriage's live grenade. The co-creator assigned herself the complication, which is both the funniest available part and a decent sign of where the show thinks its comedy lives.
The casting that is also a documentary
The central couple requires no chemistry read. Leoni and Daly met in 2014 playing married couple Elizabeth and Henry McCord on CBS's Madam Secretary, fell in love during the run, and married in real life in July 2025. Newlyweds is their second time playing spouses and their first since becoming actual newlyweds, a fact NBC's marketing leans on with both hands. Daly's own synopsis of the premise doubles as a description of any later-in-life marriage, his included:
"They get married without really knowing each other."
— Tim Daly, to TV Insider
He went on to inventory the baggage: two set-in-their-ways adults, her two kids, his ex-wife — played, again, by the woman who co-created the show.

The slot, and what NBC is trying
A few context points for where this lands:
- The night: Friday at 8:30 is NBC planting a multi-cam comedy flag on a night broadcasters mostly abandoned to reruns and Dateline.
- The company: Newlyweds is one of two new NBC comedies this season, alongside Sunset P.I., in a fall that also brings a Rockford Files reboot.
- The machinery: Lionsgate Television and Universal Television produce with the Tannenbaum Company; Emma Meisel and Ignacio Diaz-Silverio play Jeanie's kids, with Bill O'Neill in the cast and Al Madrigal recurring alongside Curtis.
Curtis has described wanting to make a show about love that starts late and figures itself out in public, and she picked the one cast in Hollywood for whom that's a rerun in the best sense. The pilot airs in eleven days; the real-life couple celebrates their second anniversary next July, by which point NBC will have told them whether the fictional marriage got renewed too.
