Wednesday is about to become a full-fledged new franchise, but fans aren't exactly thrilled with its first branch.

Summary:

  • The success of the Wednesday TV series made its transformation into a new franchise only a matter of time
  • The first spin-off series, focusing on Uncle Fester, is currently in early development
  • Fans feel the character doesn't have enough potential to lead an entire show and would have preferred another choice

The outstanding success of the debut season of the TV series Wednesday, which premiered over a year ago in November 2022, made the show's renewal for a second season practically a done deal.

Additionally, given that the show has largely revolved around just one member of the iconic Addams Family, the titular teenager Wednesday, portrayed by Jenna Ortega, many fans began to wonder if the world of the show would be expanded with more projects in the future.

Now it seems that Netflix is indeed aiming to create a spinoff to the series, but the choice of character around which it will revolve has raised certain questions among fans.

Wednesday’s Uncle Fester Spinoff Is Currently In Talks

According to Bloomberg, a new show based on another member of the Addams Family, Uncle Fester, portrayed by Fred Armisen in the original series, is in talks to be the first offshoot of the new franchise.

The project is currently in the very early stages of development, with no story written and no contracts signed, so its future remains uncertain for now, although there are no obvious reasons for it to be scrapped, given the aforementioned success of the main show.

However, many fans seem to think that Netflix is making a huge mistake by making Fester the focus of a new series, because despite the fact that Fred Armisen is a pretty talented actor, they saw his portrayal of the character as one of the weakest elements of the original show.

Fans Would've Preferred an Entirely Different Wednesday Side Project

They say that Fester is perfectly fine as a supporting character who only appeared a handful of times during the first season of Wednesday, but he doesn't have enough potential to be the show's lead.

Choosing another member of the family, such as Morticia or Gomez, portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, respectively, or some other intriguing character from the first season of the main series would have been a much better choice.

Either way, with the project not even fully greenlit yet, it is too early to bury it prematurely, as it may just prove to be entertaining enough against all odds.

Production on the second season of the Wednesday TV series is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2024, so no release dates have been announced yet.

Do you think making Uncle Fester the central character of a new show is a mistake?
