Netflix's Most Brutal Action Masterpiece With 91% on Rotten Tomatoes Is Set to Get a Sequel

If you are tired of faceless and typical action movies and John Wick, then you should definitely check out this Indonesian bloody gem and join us all in waiting for the second chapter.
Timo Tjahjanto is one of the great hopes of the new Asian action wave. The director started out working hand in hand with The Raids creator Gareth Evans on short films for the horror anthologies The ABCs of Death and V/H/S/2, and then formed the creative duo The Mo Brothers with Kimo Stamboel.
This tandem made Indonesia's most bloodthirsty films: the slasher Dara, the dark thriller Killers and the action film Headshot.
The director did not give up his violent style even in his collaboration with Netflix – in 2024, The Shadow Strays dropped, possibly one of the bloodiest and most brutal action films ever released on the platform.
The Shadow Strays Creator Announced a Sequel
The Shadow Strays became a hit and immediately won the hearts of fans of the genre – the movie has a high 91% for an action project on Rotten Tomatoes. So it comes as no surprise that this story will not end with one movie.
Timo Tjahjanto originally planned to make two movies, and he recently shared a post on his X account saying "Shadows will return."
So far, the sequel has neither a synopsis nor a release date, so we can only wait for an official announcement.
What Is The Shadow Strays About?
The elusive Shadow assassins are wreaking havoc in Japan, targeting a Yakuza clan. The mission of the female assassin codenamed 13 is not going according to plan and she is told to lay low. Living in the slums of Jakarta, she is hoping someone will contact her soon.
Out of boredom, 13 befriends a restless boy whose drug-addicted mother was killed by bandits. A few days later, the boy is kidnapped. 13 decides to rescue him, declaring war on powerful criminals.
The Shadow Strays Is the Ultimate Bloody Action Flick for Anyone Tired of John Wick
The Shadow Strays is full of spectacular fights and shootouts in various locations. Already in the prologue, 13 slashes through a crowd of yakuza with katanas, glides silently through the night shadows, and turns on her thermal sight to deal with enemies in the blinding darkness.
And then there is a battle in the Cambodian jungle, a massacre in a Jakarta nightclub, a fight with a bunch of cops in a cramped apartment, and, of course, an adrenaline-pumping female duel in the finale, where the two main characters fight not for life, but to the death.
If you are tired of John Wick but still want to see an exciting action movie about the confrontation between a lone wolf and underground killers, then The Shadow Strays is not to be missed.
It is a crazy, bloody action flick in the best tradition of the new Indonesian extreme and a pure adrenaline ride.
