Netflix's New Anime From 'Jujutsu Kaisen' Director Is a Masterpiece With 8.1 on IMDb

The Summer Hikaru Died is a unique mix of the seemingly incompatible genres of slice-of-life and horror that will surprise even the most experienced anime fans. Here's why you definitely shouldn't skip this one.
One of the most anticipated titles of the year, The Summer Hikaru Died, was finally released on July 5. Four out of 12 episodes have been released so far, and it's already clear the adaptation of Mokumokuren's manga is a must-see.
The title was made by CygamesPictures, the studio known for quiet yet high-quality projects like Apocalypse Hotel. Ryohei Takeshita, who also directed some of the best anime in recent years, including Jujutsu Kaisen, helmed the project.
What Is 'The Summer Hikaru Died' About?
Yoshiki and Hikaru have been inseparable friends since birth. When Hikaru disappears in the mountains, Yoshiki is the first to search for him. The boy is found, crippled but alive. He doesn't remember what happened, and only Yoshiki realizes that something is wrong.
One day, Yoshiki directly asks if it was really Hikaru who returned from the mountains. Suddenly, his friend doesn't deny anything – he only asks to let him live a normal life.
Meanwhile, paranormal phenomena begin to occur in the village, probably connected to Hikaru. The secret to solving the mystery is hidden in the history of the family of the boy who died in the mountains.
'The Summer Hikaru Died' Is a Unique Blend of Slice-of-Life and Horror
From the first seconds, the anime immerses viewers in the viscous atmosphere of a hot summer – the perfect backdrop for horror stories, as Stephen King has demonstrated more than once.
The Summer Hikaru Died doesn't have typical jump scares and operates in the same realm as many live-action J-horrors – finding the scary in the everyday and the paranormal in the ordinary.
At the same time, The Summer Hikaru Died is essentially a coming-of-age story about accepting yourself. However, it is the horror element that sets it apart from other stories in the slice-of-life genre – the unusual setting makes you see familiar situations in a new light.
What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'The Summer Hikaru Died'?
Decider critic Maddy Casale praised the anime, saying:
“The Summer Hikaru Died looks to be an eerie, visually-appealing, and complex piece of media that will only grow more gripping and thrilling as it unfolds.”
