Nothing is forever, but Girls5eva’s shenanigans have given the show a longer lease on life.

Fans of musical sitcoms are in for some good news – Girls5eva’s Season 3 has just dropped on Netflix and it’s a hit with the press.

The show’s road to the third season was a rocky one, as Girls5eva was infamously axed by its original streamer – Peacock – after Season 2 and the six-episode follow-up was only made after the series moved to Netflix.

Girls5eva is the creation of multi-tasking showrunner Meredith Scardino and has some 30 Rock alumni like Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and Jeff Richmond on its production team. Devotees of both shows will be able to tell that Girls5eva is wearing the 30 Rock DNA on its sleeve, as it similarly lampoons the brouhaha of the entertainment business and has a musical slant.

Its mischievous take on the inner workings of the music scene has been noticed by industry observers, as the show garnered an Emmy nod during its original run. No offense taken by showbiz bigwigs, then.

Girls5eva’s Season 3 continues from where Season 2 left off and adds some fine laughs to the proceedings.

The titular girl group, who had a short blaze of glory with their one hit around 2000 and have been down on their luck ever since, get a second shot at stardom after an up-and-coming rapper samples their track.

Having broken up earlier due to the death of one of the band members, the four ladies team up once again and attempt to reach famedom. Their efforts are hilariously undercut by multiple mid-life crisis issues, including complicated relationships, children, ailing parents and painful joints.

As they work to recapture their musical mojo, the four also try to stay true to their personal interests and character traits.

The demure sweetheart Dawn, narcissistic non-singer Summer, tomboyish workaholic Gloria and attention-seeking diva Wickie are played with flair and gusto by Sara Bareilles, Busy Phillips, Paula Pell and Renée Elise Goldsberry, respectively. Also starring is Ashley Gold, who portrays the deceased group member in the flashbacks.

To commemorate the premiere, the principal cast recorded a best-of medley featuring actual songs from the show, with the video of the performance being released by Netflix in the lead-up to the premiere.

What Is Girls5eva Season 3 About?

Season 3 sends the four on a tour, where they aim to hit it big at the New York City Radio Music Hall. Singing and funny mishaps ensue. While the show does a job of making viewers laugh, its story falters at certain moments and the season capper does not do much to improve things for the band, not helped by the revival’s undercut length.

Still, it's a rip-roaringly good time, if the trade buzz is to be believed. Fans have also raved about the revived show on social media.

“Girls5Eva is back! A true comedy, where you miss some jokes because you are laughing so hard at others. May there be at least 7 more seasons,” wrote X user pfinger 18.

However, others have been less appreciative in their response.

“It's very funny to see so many "this is the new 30 rock" or "30 rock's successor" reviews about girls5eva's third season when 1) it's been that since its first season, 2) there's like four other shows that could easily be called that because they all work the same formula well”, noted X user woahitsjuanito.

What can we say? The road to glory is a tough one. Hopefully the Girls5eva group will be able to match the success of the show’s creators come next season.
