The company officially stepped away from sponsoring the actress’ Oscar campaign earlier this month.

Emilia Pérez’s scandalous reputation keeps swirling Hollywood ahead of the Oscars ceremony, while the movie now has far less chances to take as many statuettes as it seemed possible just a couple of months ago.

Following media users’ rediscovery of Karla Sofía Gascón’s hateful tweets from several years ago, the industry was quick to turn against the actress, with some urging the Academy to withdraw Gascón’s Best Actress nomination for violating the ceremony’s rules.

The last several weeks had the media filled with all sorts of rumours about Netflix ’s reaction to the controversy, though the company remained silent. Well, until now.

Netflix Has Now Officially Condemned Karla Sofía Gascón Too

As Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria revealed, the company’s position sticks with the public condemnation of the actress’ actions since they didn’t affect only her, but the movie as well.

“You know what I think is really a bummer [is] for 100 very incredibly talented people who made an amazing movie. If you look at the nominations and all of the awards love it’s received, I think it’s such a bummer that it’s distracted from that”, she added, stating that Gascón’s co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez did an amazing job and were the last people who deserved this much of hatred for their work.

Talking about Emilia Pérez, Bajaria revealed that Netflix would have certainly bought Jacques Audiard’s film had the company known what the flick’s awards campaign would end with.

She also stated that Emilia Pérez didn’t deserve such a fate either as “that movie is incredible — it’s creative and it’s bold and that what you want. You want to take those big swings. And so yes, there’s incredibly talented people who made that movie that, by the way, resonated with a lot of people this year”.

After the actress’ offensive tweets about Black people, Arabs and even her co-star Selena Gomez resurfaced, Gascón had to see many fellow nominees and colleagues turn away from her.

The situation got even messier when the industry’s critics chimed in, making it clear that Emilia Pérez’s star wasn’t that much of an anticipated guest at approaching awards ceremonies like PGAs, DGAs, Critics Choice, BAFTA and, ultimately, the Oscars.

Additionally, Netflix refused to arrange Gascón’s commodities while attending ceremonies, stating that it will no longer promote the actress’ awards campaign and thus won’t provide accommodation and transportation for her.

Around a week ago, Gascón revealed she was going to step away from social media, letting “the film to be appreciated for what it is.”
