Netflix's Death of the Pastor's Wife: how Mica Miller died — and why her family rejects the official answer
There's a version of this story that fits in one line of a coroner's report. Netflix's three-part docuseries exists because almost nobody who loved Mica Miller thinks that line is the whole story.
The facts of the timeline, at least, are not in dispute. So let's start there.
What happened in April 2024
Mica Miller was 30, living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and married to John-Paul "JP" Miller, pastor of Solid Rock Church. On April 25, 2024, she served him with divorce papers. Two days later, she was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina, about 70 miles from home. She had called 911 herself, saying she intended to end her life and asking that the call be traced so her family could find her. On May 7, the medical examiner ruled her death a suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and the county investigation closed.
Ten days, one ruling, case shut. Except nothing about the months leading up to that day looked shut to the people around her.

Why her family never accepted "case closed"
The documentary — built on Mica's own journals, texts, and home videos, used with her family's permission — lays out what she documented before her death:
- Repeated police reports, including one filed a month before she died saying she feared for her life after her tires were deflated.
- A tracking device discovered on her car.
- A handwritten note alleging she'd been abused "in every way I can think of."
- A divorce filing in October 2023 that was later dismissed — before she tried again in April.
Then there's what happened after. JP announced Mica's death as a suicide from the pulpit days later — before the coroner's ruling existed. He pressed to collect her journals and her counselor's notes, a move her counselor Laura Hucks reads bluntly in the series: she says he wanted the records
"so he can end her narrative and start his narrative."
To be precise about what's being claimed: the series does not argue Mica was murdered, and the official ruling stands. What her family and friends reject is the idea that a suicide ruling ends the accounting — several of them say directly that his treatment of her drove her there. JP has never been charged in connection with her death; his lawyer has dismissed the abuse allegations as "unfounded rumors." He has, however, since been federally indicted on cyberstalking charges, to which the family's response was, roughly: finally, someone's asking the right questions.
That's the story the docuseries tells: not a whodunit, but an audit of everything a ruling can't measure.
