It’s about the very opposite thing, actually.

If we’re talking about true crime documentaries, we probably think of the ones that tell the stories of bloody killings, unprecedented thefts and kidnappings and all kinds of conspiracies that are behind people’s crimes.

However, this genre doesn’t always imply all these things, and there are documentaries where nobody is killed, but they’re still extremely hard to watch. Netflix ’s new three-part series is a perfect example of such a true crime, and believe us it’ll leave you speechless.

It may come as a surprise, but instead of murder stories it tells about just the opposite thing, child births. This series gives insight on the sperm donation industry and some people who struggle to conceive a child and end up in trouble trying it.

The main character of this documentary, even though he doesn’t show up in it, is Jonathan Jacob Meijer, Dutch musician and Youtuber who one day decided to become a sperm donor. He signed up to some online donation organizations where people seek help, but instead of really helping them with all the precautions, he messed it all up.

The point is Meijer has misled the majority of his clients by hiding the fact that he has fathered more than 500 children, at least 102 of them in the Netherlands alone.

If you’re now doubting what’s the problem here and thinking that’s how sperm donors work, don’t be misguided. Meijer’s dangerous actions can lead to the risk of incest between the people he has produced, and they’ll have to resort to demand a DNA test to ensure whoever they are falling for and not to end up with their half siblings.

Titled The Man With 1000 Kids, the docuseries follows the serial donor’s criminal path that, fortunately, led to him being banned from sperm donation. It contains interviews with women Meijer deceived, who are now forced to live with the consequences of his actions, and lawyers who help the audience to unpack this outrageous story.

However, even though Meijer is banned in the legal world of sperm donation, there is still a chance that he can continue doing it illegally. That’s why the show explores the reasonability of stronger law regulation in this sphere and in health care overall.

Check out how criminals can exploit people’s problems and desires to be parents, as The Man With 1000 Kids is now available for streaming on Netflix.
