Before Johnny Flynn, who got to play the leading role in The Talented Mr. Ripley’s newest Netflix adaptation, fell victim to Andrew Scott ’s Tom Ripley and his crafty fraud, he made an astonishing appearance in 2020’s romantic comedy starring Anya Taylor-Joy.

And while the film went unfairly unnoticed by the audience, Flynn’s performance surely deserved to be praised for bringing to the screens the most sophisticated version of Jane Austen’s famous character.

Based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel of the same name, Emma follows wealthy and witty Emma, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, who lives with her father quite carelessly until one day the latter decides that it’s time for his daughter to settle down with one of the local communities noble men that will meet the wealthy family’s requirements.

Unlike her father, Emma is quite far from thoughts about marriage — that’s why she embarks on a playful adventure while rejecting potential matches for various reasons. The young girl keeps playing her own game until one day she encounters a young landowner who shares her views for the outdated traditions.

This landowner, Mr. George Knightley, is portrayed by none other than Johnny Flynn. Here he delivers a powerful dramatical performance that finds its equilibrium between a general aloofness from the society and humorous, yet quite sensitive way of perceiving life.

Over the course of the plot Knightley proceeds to get to know Emma better than anyone else as both share the same values and the same reason for mocking the society.

On top of that, both characters are quite similar in their way of expressing (or rather not expressing) their feelings — as it becomes obvious for viewers and even for Emma and George that they developed romantic feelings for each other, both are just too proud to confess first.

Knightley’s inner torment in fear of losing Emma to another, more energetic competitor proves the romantic nature of his personality — the trait that has never been highlighted as much as in Flynn’s performance thus cementing the actor’s work as the best interpretation of the character so far.
