Netflix’s Take on ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Has One Unexpected Bright Spot

There was only one reason fans kept their hope for Netflix’s take on Jane Austen’s timeless classics, but now it seems like another big star might do the trick after all.
Every beloved story quickly turns into a risky matter when it comes to Netflix adapting it, and Pride and Prejudice’s upcoming new movie might not be an exception as many of the book’s fans expected.
Starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden in the leading roles, the future limited series was a pretty controversial move even upon its announcement back in April, though many still suggested they should wait out and see whether a fan-favourite cast member would come and save Netflix’s attempt to adapt the classics.
As Pride and Prejudice’s recently released first look confirmed, there might have been a major shift in fans’ bets on what will eventually save the show from failing hard.
‘Pride and Prejudice’ Fans Slam Casting Choices in Netflix Adaptation, but Find a Reason to Watch It Anyway
While the 1995 TV series and 2005 movie are still regarded as some of Jane Austen’s best adaptations out there, it’s likely hard for the Netflix version to compare, especially since nothing in the show’s first image looks quite like “Pride and Prejudice” so far.
“They....they don't even look like they're related. And none of them looks below 20....they look 25+ at the very least”, Redditor storytellergirl07 commented under the news in a Reddit thread.
“I can't picture these women as teens. Jane is 31, Elizabeth is 29. Seems like we're going backwards with this”, spifflog agreed.
“Louis Partridge as Wickham is throwing me off. He's 22 and Jack Lowden (Darcy) is 35. I can't exactly imagine them as childhood playfellows”, Macktempermental added.
Still, whether Netflix’s series will in fact be that bad or not, at least it will serve for something truly important, as some fans also noted.
“The good news is that this adaptation might, at long last, bring a truce between the '95 and '05 factions, united against a common enemy”, SugarAndIceQueen suggested.
Olivia Colman Isn’t Saving Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’, but Fiona Shaw Still Might
Even though the book’s fans were a bit consoled by the presence of Olivia Colman in the movie, saying that they believe she wouldn’t opt for a bad project anyway, it seems like everyone should now count on a different cast member.
Per Variety’s report, Harry Potter and Killing Eve’s actress Fiona Shaw is also set to star in Pride and Prejudice as Lady Catherine de Bourg, which quickly lifted potential viewers’ spirits after a major disappointment.
“FIONA SHAW AS LADY CATHERINE!?!! Hold the phone, stop the presses, call the cops. WHAT! I officially don’t even care if it’s a good adaptation anymore (not true but FEELS true)”, coolhandjennie wrote in the same thread.
“Wait, Fiona Shaw is in this as well as the new Sense and Sensibility? She's spoiling us!” orensiocled chimed in.
Pride and Prejudice is currently expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2026.
