Hollywood’s most important award isn’t as predictable as it might seem — in one way.

For almost a century, the Oscars ceremony remains one of the most awaited and intriguing events in the cinema industry, even though history proves that the Academy’s voters aren’t such wild cards as some have long considered them.

Traditionally, it’s believed that the Oscars isn’t the most accurate, but still a more or less faithful repetition of the Golden Globes, the second most important award, the ceremony for which takes place around two months earlier.

However, there’s been a big change in the Oscars’ dynamics recently, probably due to many people realising that the statuettes will eventually be given to the same Golden Globe faces; now the Academy seems to be relying on another major award ceremony’s results, and, just like in some previous years, they might shift things for some of this year’s Oscar frontrunners.

BAFTA Awards Has Recently Been More Accurate Oscar Predictor Than the Golden Globes

Even though the British Oscar sticks to its own lists of contenders which include just a few American Oscar nominees, the BAFTA voters have actually chimed in with the Oscar ones quite many times during the last couple of years.

This might not concern the Best Picture category since in this case many British movies that didn’t make it to the Oscars turn out to be big winners, but there’s been several curious coincidences with Best Actor and Best Actress nominees.

For example, last year Killers of the Flower Moon ’s Lily Gladstone was the most certain frontrunner for the Oscar, but BAFTA didn’t even include her in the list of nominees and gave the statuette to Emma Stone who later on took home Oscar too.

In 2021, Chadwick Boseman was believed to win the Oscar posthumously, but the award went to Anthony Hopkins who previously had also earned the BAFTA statuette.

Additionally, even earlier, in 2019, Glenn Close was everyone’s favorite for the Oscar in the Best Actress category, but both BAFTA and Academy awards were given to Olivia Colman.

Demi Moore’s Oscar Win Now Depends on BAFTA Results

Despite winning the Golden Globe for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror satire The Substance, Demi Moore is still an uncertain Oscar winner, especially after Anora swept major categories at the Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guild Awards.

With Mikey Madison now having much higher chances to compete alongside Moore in the Best Actress category, it’s also likely that the former will become a new favorite among BAFTA voters, which is bad news for Demi Moore’s seemingly undoubted win at the Oscars.

The BAFTA ceremony is taking place on February 16, while the Academy will unravel its big winners on March 2.
