The series’ completely new and fresh take on the AI issue is still ignored by critics though.

Modern sci-fi shows can come as a threatening message from the not so distant future, but they’re still a compelling watch, and the genre hits like Severance or Silo are just a couple out of a myriad of proofs.

In the times when new technologies are always here to facilitate people’s life, a show like Netflix ’s Black Mirror comes along to debunk all the naive thoughts about the AI not posing any threat to mankind, and yet another series delving into the same matter just landed on streaming.

The German show, dropped on Netflix just several days ago, has already climbed high in Netflix’s global chart and probably isn’t planning to leave the spot anytime soon.

Cassandra Is Netflix’s New Sci-fi Darling

Released on February 6, the series was quick to become a new major hit among Netflix’s audiences; according to FlixPatrol, Cassandra is currently holding the second position in the streaming’s global top-10, surpassed only by a Swedish crime drama The Åre Murders.

Set in modern-day Germany, the show follows a family who moves into a 1970s-style house which is also the oldest smart home equipped with technological features which will make their life considerably easier.

Things are good at first, when the family finds out that the house is actually run by an AI named Cassandra who also seems to be happy to welcome new owners, but that shifts quickly as soon as Cassandra, haunted by her personal troubled past, starts making an attempt to drive Samira out of the house, aiming at taking her position as David’s wife and a mother to their children.

Cassandra’s Sympathetic Take on AI Hasn’t Been Appreciated by Critics So Far

Unlike many other shows that also send their viewers a signal about a potential threat coming from technologies, Cassandra actually develops stories from both sides, not only giving some support to the family trapped in their new house and menaced by an AI program, but also diving deeper into the psychological reasons why Cassandra is actually more a threat rather than a smart family helper.

By offering a broader perspective, the show gives an opportunity for the viewers to have more sympathy for something we usually perceive as an artificial essence with no feelings.

Despite its streaming success, Cassandra so far has no reviews from critics, but holds a score of 71% from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
