Jack on whether he will have trust issues with Mel because of her secret.

Summary

  • Despite the Christmas spirit, there was no shortage of dramatic moments in the last two episodes of Virgin River Season 5.
  • Charmaine finally gave birth to her twins, and we found out who their real father is.
  • Mel had to keep the secret, and actor Martin Henderson spoke with TV Insider about whether it will affect Mel and Jack's relationship.

For most of its run, Netflix 's Virgin River has been perceived by viewers as a cozy drama set in an equally cozy small town in Northern California. And while the show always had its fair share of drama, the feel-good idyll was immediately shattered in Season 5, when the titular town experienced a full-blown mayhem. Then Netflix gave us a little holiday cheer when two Christmas specials dropped on November 30, bringing some much-needed levity to Virgin River.

But even this time, the quiet didn't last long. In addition to preparing for Christmas with their families and loved ones, the characters faced a host of new problems, revelations and secrets. One of them was the promise Mel had made to Charmaine, despite their previous aversion to each other. Martin Henderson, who played Jack, shared his thoughts on how this would affect Jack and Mel's romance as they're about to get married.

The New Promise Mel Must Keep

Open your champagne, we have to celebrate. After four years of the show's run, it happened, Charmaine finally gave birth to her twins. But now Mel must keep an important secret from Jack.

It turns out that the real biological father of the children was not Jack ( is anyone surprised?), but Calvin. Charmaine had to lie about Jack because the FBI dropped all charges against Calvin, and with him back in town, Mel also had to promise not to tell Jack the truth.

Martin Henderson’s Opinion

Mel and Jack's relationship grows stronger despite the miscarriage. All of this is because they understand and support each other, and all of this would not be possible without trust. Except that if Jack finds out the truth, it could be undermined.

Speaking to TV Insider, Martin Henderson shared his views on the matter.

'Now they're at this stage where they're engaged to get married, they're making this commitment, and they're setting the ground rules for their relationship, and they're talking about what the boundaries are and what aspects of trust that they have to both have in order to feel safe,' he said.

'And you could argue that this is a little betrayal of that pact, and it's one of those complicated things because yes, she's made a promise to Jack, but now she's made a promise to Charmaine, and she can't do both at the same time. So where do her loyalties lie? We'll wait and see.'

At the same time, the actor noted that his ideas are different from those of the writers, and the latter's plans may change.

'[I]t is an interesting point because Mel and Jack said they would never keep anything from each other, and then here she is, keeping this giant [thing] from him. So who knows? The writers might conveniently forget that little pact or just have it not come up in the conversation. But I think that could be a really fun thing to explore with the characters.'

Will Jack find out the truth, and if so, how will he react? Will Chekhov's gun fire and we get a heartbreaking fallout from Mel's betrayal, or will the writers really choose to ignore that moment and develop the Charmaine and Calvin's storyline in parallel with Mel and Jack's? As Henderson rightly points out, we'll have to wait and see. Until then, let's keep an eye out for Season 6, which is expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025.
