'News to Me': Nancy Meyers Didn’t Know About 'The Holiday' Reboot — And Neither Did I
A reboot no one asked for — especially the director.
Following film news out of curiosity (and sometimes mild dread), I came across something that genuinely surprised me: The Holiday is getting a reboot as limited series from Apple Studios. Yes, that Holiday. And no, its original creator Nancy Meyers apparently had no idea.
Meyers posted a short but telling response on Instagram: "News to me. Imagine my surprise when I opened Instagram and this was the first post I saw." Frankly, I was just as surprised — though sadly, this kind of move is becoming the norm.
Nowadays, reboots like Freaky Friday and The Devil Wears Prada 2 have become standard in Hollywood. But The Holiday is the kind of cosy film we return to because it still works — warm, charming, and complete as it is. Rebooting it feels like nostalgia repackaged, minus the people who made it special in the first place.
Naturally, I got curious what other people thought about all this — so I headed to Reddit.
"Wow. That's one way to get people not interested in this show," wrote nagidrac.
"I almost feel that the movie is too perfect to continue on with the story," added hotcheetoprincesss.
"Oh I am not happy. 1) This movie is sacred. No reboot necessary. 2) If they think it’s good enough to reboot, they should respect the original creator!" — creakyvoiceaperture was equally direct.
Interestingly, Nancy Meyers has spent the past few years trying to get her new film, Paris Paramount, off the ground. The project, which features Owen Wilson, Penélope Cruz, and Michael Fassbender, is still waiting for a studio to pick it up.
It does make you wonder: do studios actually want new feel-good stories — or just new packaging for old ones?
