Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir Divides Fans: Will It Be Worth Watching?

Prime Video has teased a live-action with Nicolas Cage suiting up as Spider-Noir from Marvel’s comic titled Spider-Man Noir. Here’s what fans think about the new project and why it already seems controversial.
On Monday, May 12, Amazon Prime released a first look at Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir in the live-action TV series of the same name. The actor, however, hides behind a black and white mask and a cape and hat combo.
Cage stars as Spider-Noir in the series and is joined by Brendan Gleeson, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun li, Karen Rodriguez and Jack Huston as series regulars. The live-action series will be set in the 1930s and will be shown in both black and white and color.
We already saw (or rather heard) Cage as Spider-Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In the upcoming series, according to the official description, he is “an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator” who is “forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”
Now, what could possibly go wrong?
Will Spider-Noir Be Good? Here’s What Fans Think
Reacting to the news, many fans had one thing to say: “it’s a Sony project, so…”. What does it mean?
Sony is the studio behind the animated Spider-Verse movies, and that's a good thing. The story of Miles Morales has captured hearts around the world and won many awards, including an Academy Award. However, this is the same studio that gave the world such controversial projects as Madame Web and Morbius. Of course, many people aren't rushing to get their hopes up for Spider-Noir, even if they admit that the first photo does look good.
“It doesn't look bad but I'll wait til I see it in motion. This kinda looks like a still from a high quality fan film. That's not trying to be a dig but given Sonys track record with these projects I really hope they put more effort into this,” Redditor Rpponce said.
Others argue that this may be Sony finally doing the right thing.
“I love they kept the same actor from Spider-Verse. This was all Sony needed to do all along. Spider Verse spinoffs. Not the Morbius, Kraven, Madam Webb stuff. I would actually be interested in stories about Peni, Gwen, Noir, and Peter B. Parker. A lot of these same actors could play in live action too,” noted Redditor Itzie4.
Another interesting observation from fans is how Marvel seems to be slowly shifting towards darker and grittier projects now that James Gunn is at the helm of DC. In Gunn's upcoming Superman movie, things seem much less dark than they used to be in DC projects; on the contrary, Marvel has a chance to change its own generally lighthearted approach to something new.
When Will Spider-Noir Premiere?
There is no exact release date right now, but the series is projected to hit screens sometime in 2026.
Where Will Spider-Noir Stream?
Spider-Noir will first swing on MGM+’s linear channel. The next day, it will stream globally on Amazon Prime Video.
