The actress’ latest release isn’t doing well with critics, but some others are timeless hits.

It isn’t a rare occasion to see Nicole Kidman leading a movie in the past couple of years: back in 2024, the actress starred in a romantic comedy A Family Affair and a viral erotic thriller Babygirl, all the while audiences as well could see her in a more recent psychological thriller Holland.

The movie, released on Prime Video on March 27, wasn’t quite a hit neither with the critics nor with the viewers, currently holding discouraging scores of 23% and 24% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, with a status of one of the most acclaimed actresses in Hollywood, Kidman has plenty of other great options in her filmography; some of those might even become your next watch if you want to see her best performances in high-rated films instead of trying your luck with Holland.

Rabbit Hole (2010)

Rotten Tomatoes score: 86%

Based on David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2006 play of the same name, the movie has become another highlight of Kidman’s career, granting her nods from the Academy, Golden Globes and SAG Awards among others.

Also starring Aaron Eckhart in one of the leading roles, Rabbit Hole follows Becca and Howie, a couple grieving the loss of their 4-year-old child; trying to find a new meaning in life, both tend to stick to different ways of starting everything from scratch, with Howie holding on to the memories of their son and Becca planning to sell the house and try to move on.

Their relationship starts cracking when both find other people to pour their hearts out to.

To Die For (1995)

Rotten Tomatoes score: 88%

A black comedy movie that brought Kidman her first Golden Globe award, To Die For is based on Joyce Maynard’s novel of the same name and follows Kidman’s Suzanne Stone, a weather reporter at a small-town cable station who dreams of bigger career heights, aiming at the news anchor position.

However, she soon realises it might be her middle-class husband who stops her from becoming a true TV celebrity, which is why Suzanne is set to do her best to get rid of him forever.

Apart from Kidman, the movie also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Matt Dillon and Casey Affleck.

The Northman (2022)

Rotten Tomatoes score: 90%

An epic period drama directed by Robert Eggers, The Northman boasts of an all-star cast that comprises Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe among others.

The movie is based on Danish legends and follows Amleth, a Viking prince who embarks on a mission to avenge the death of his father killed by his power-hungry uncle.

Despite not having had much success in the box office, The Northman was still a massive hit among critics and has ultimately become a worthy addition to Eggers’ collection of high-rated flicks.

God Grew Tired of Us (2007)

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

Having Kidman on board as a narrator, Christopher Quinn’s documentary offers a glimpse into the life of three Sudanese refugees — Jon Bul Dau, Daniel Abul Pach and Panther Bior — exploring both their past and present as they navigate through a new life in the United States after experiencing unimaginable horrors in their homeland.

The movie has won several major awards for the best documentary and is still regarded as one of the highest-acclaimed films of the genre.

Flirting (1992)

Rotten Tomatoes score: 96%

One of the first movies Nicole Kidman starred in, John Duigan’s coming-of-age drama remains the actress’ highest-rated film to date.

Coming as the second part of the director’s incomplete autobiographical trilogy, Flirting also stars Noah Taylor as Danny Embling, a boarding school student who falls in love with a fellow Ugandan student from an all-female prep school just nearby.

However, their blooming romance soon becomes a target of massive racial prejudice and Danny’s own rawness in romantic relationships.

A sequel to Duigan’s The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting followed in its predecessor’s footsteps, also winning the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Film.
