The actress failed to achieve her main goal, which was the reason she left The Vampire Diaries in the first place.

Nina Dobrev moved to Canada at a young age and has lived there for most of her life. She started going to auditions as a child and began her acting career in the mid-2000s. Although it wasn't until 2009 that she landed a leading role.

The producers invited her to play the main role of Elena Gilbert (and later Katherine Pierce) in the TV series The Vampire Diaries. The plot is based on a love triangle: two vampire brothers fight for Elena's heart.

The audience's interest in the series was fueled by the relationship between the main actors — Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, who played Damon Salvatore. They were a beautiful real-life couple, but in the end allegedly parted as friends. There were rumors that the producers even persuaded them to have a fake romance until the end of the series, but they were never proven.

The project was so popular with viewers that it lasted until 2017. In season 6, the writers "killed" Elena, which affected the show’s ratings.

However, after The Vampire Diaries, Nina slowed down and did not appear on the screen as often as before. The actress could have starred in a dozen popular movies after finishing her work on the show, but she decided not to do it.

Nina admitted in one of the interviews with Harper's Bazaar that she no longer wanted to play teenage girls. She aspired to play serious roles, work with the greatest directors and tell incredible stories, and to do that, she had to be selective about the roles she chose.

Dobrev's selectivity has led her to a dead end. It is extremely rare to see Nina on the big screen now, and the big breakthrough role has never come.

After The Vampire Diaries, Nina starred in the horror-comedy The Final Girls with Taissa Farmiga and the adventure movie Barely Lethal, which starred Jessica Alba, Hailee Steinfeld, and Sophie Turner. In the action film xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Nina appeared alongside Vin Diesel.

In 2017, Dobrev's filmography was expanded with the romantic comedy Crash Pad about a woman who decided to take revenge on her husband for cheating on her with a young lover.

Then the star of the vampire saga appeared in the role of a student whose friends forced each other into the state of clinical death in the hope of learning the limits of human consciousness. Flatliners is a remake of Joel Schumacher's hit movie, which many viewers were waiting for, but in the end the project turned out to be rather disappointing.

The latest work of the actress is the comedy Sick Girl, in which Nina plays the leading role. The movie will be released on October 19, 2023.
