No Farewell to 'Wednesday': Netflix Already Greenlights Season 3 Before Season 2 Premiere

A spin-off is also in the works.
The Wednesday franchise just got a major boost. Even before season 2 has premiered, Netflix has already renewed Tim Burton’s hit series for a third season. On top of that, a new spin-off set in the Addams universe is in development — though for now, the plot is under wraps.
Netflix seems confident that season 2 will be a hit. The announcement of season 3 came through the streamer’s social media, and was later confirmed in interviews with both Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega in The Hollywood Reporter.
As someone who enjoys quirky, slightly eerie worlds (anything that reminds me of Burton’s style is a win), I really liked season 1. At times it felt like the show wasn’t sure if it wanted to lean more adult or stay teen-friendly — but it had charm, and I’d definitely be curious to see a darker, more fantasy-driven tone going forward.
Still, hearing about a third season before the second has even aired? Feels a little... commercial. Hopefully the quality keeps up.
Season 2 of Wednesday will be split in two parts. The first drops August 6, and the second on September 3. Ortega has teased a darker tone this time, with the creators drawing inspiration from iconic horror films like Carrie and Prom Night.
But that success came at a cost. Ortega has admitted the show’s popularity brought on intense stress and pressure, especially as someone more introverted.
"I felt lost and unhappy," she said of the post-filming period.
Looks like she’ll be living in the spotlight for a while — and in Wednesday’s braids — because Netflix clearly has big plans for this world. It’s fun to see the Wednesday universe growing, but part of me wonders — could Ortega get stuck in this role for too long?
