One of Demon Slayer's strongest doesn't even use Breathing — the top non-Hashira, ranked
The Hashira get the posters, the profile pictures, and the tragic backstory episodes. Fine. Earned.
But the Infinity Castle era has made one thing very clear: the kids caught up. A handful of non-Hashira are now casually doing things that would've been Pillar-only content two arcs ago, and one of them does it without using a single Breathing Style — the entire foundation of the Corps' fighting system. Manga spoilers ahead, obviously. Let's rank.
5. Genya Shinazugawa — the rule-breaker
Genya cannot use Breathing. At all. In a world where Breathing is the only human tech against demons, that should make him cannon fodder — instead, he eats demons mid-fight, temporarily borrowing their physiology, then chases it with a shotgun loaded with wisteria-laced rounds. He fought Upper Rank One, Kokushibo, in a battle that required two Hashira and everything Genya had. A man with no technique, hanging in the single scariest fight in the series, on sheer spite and appetite. Iconic.
4. Kanao Tsuyuri — the quiet cheat code
Hashira-level reflexes, Flower Breathing, and eyesight so good she can track movements nobody else can see — a gift she pushes to self-destructive extremes against Upper Rank Two, Doma. Kanao's whole deal is being terrifyingly good while making zero noise about it, which in a cast of screamers is basically a superpower on its own.
3. Inosuke Hashibira — feral excellence
Raised by boars, invented his own Breathing Style out of pure vibes, dislocates his joints on purpose, and turned out to have poison resistance at the exact moment fighting Doma required it. Inosuke is what happens when natural talent never meets a single adult with a clipboard.
2. Zenitsu Agatsuma — the glow-up of the decade
The boy who could only fight unconscious went and soloed an Upper Rank — Kaigaku, his former senior disciple — using a Seventh Form of Thunder Breathing he invented himself. His Japanese voice actor Hiro Shimono called the duel one of Zenitsu's biggest moments and put it plainly:
"Zenitsu has become stronger in many ways."
His English VA Aleks Le went further, promising the arc would take Zenitsu "to new places fans never imagined possible." They were both underselling it.
1. Tanjiro Kamado — yes, obviously, and here's why
Sun Breathing — the origin style every other Breathing technique is a watered-down copy of — plus the Demon Slayer Mark, plus access to the Transparent World, plus a forehead harder than most Upper Ranks' careers. By the finale, the protagonist without a Pillar title is trading blows with Muzan himself. The list was never really in question at the top; the fun was always in the middle.
Honorable mention: Murata. No mark, no special style, no plot armor anyone can identify — and yet the man survives everything. The true strongest ability in Demon Slayer is Murata's HR-approved luck.
