‘One Piece’ Season 2 First Look Has Everyone Talking About Just One Detail

Some things look good in an anime, but not so good in live-action. For One Piece, however, everything looks just fine: even the craziest parts.
Netflix’s One Piece is outstanding in many ways. First of all, it’s one of the very few successful live-action adaptations of iconic anime. Secondly, somehow it manages to pull off things that would definitely be considered too cheesy in other projects — starting with a tremendously positive and cheerful main character all the way up to one small detail that has every single One Piece fan giggling right now.
Netflix has just released a first look at One Piece season 2, and everyone’s early reactions were pretty hilarious. It’s not about seeing the beloved characters again or new plot lines being teased; for them, it’s about… the two cigars.
In the original anime, there is a character called Smoker the White Hunter, who, as you can guess, a) will be in live-action’s season 2 and b) smokes two cigars at the same time. He did so in the anime; and he does so in the newly released videoclip from season 2.
That’s it, that’s the detail that has fans applauding.
“Double cigars on Smoker goes equal parts absurd and ridiculously hard in Live Action,” noted Redditor Spiraticus.
But for fans, it is more than just a hilarious nod to the original. It is also a testament to the live-action’s most important part that it owes its success to.
“I knew the live action was in good hands when they kept Garp’s goofy dog hat and nobody in the show made a MCU-esque joke about it. The live action version revels in One Piece being weird, and that’s part of why it works,” explained Redditor KNZFive.
In adaptations, the trickiest part is to balance between finding a new audience and keeping the old fans satisfied. One Piece gives a master class in how to do that without betraying everything the original stood for, and the little details like keeping the two cigars even though it’s frankly ridiculous prove it.
Who Plays Smoker in ‘One Piece’ Live Action?
Smoker is portrayed in Netflix’s One Piece by Callum Kerr, who you may know from Fox’s series Monarch or from Amazon Prime’s The Wheel of Time.
At The One Sheet podcast with Kyle Fortch, Kerr revealed that he wasn’t a fan of One Piece before being cast in the show. After being cast as Smoker, he “flicked through the anime” (mainly watching the scenes with his own character to get a grasp of it).
However, the actor doubts he will finish the original anime: we’re not judging, since it has over 1,100 episodes.
When Will ‘One Piece’ Season 2 Release?
One Piece season 2 doesn’t have a scheduled release date on Netflix yet, but it is definitely coming in 2026.
Besides, the first look has confirmed that the work on season 3 is already underway.
