The devil is in the details. Or, should we say, ‘the angel’?

As actors go through several rounds of auditions, their characters and the way they portray them are subject to change. While they have some descriptions and, in most cases, some lines written out for their characters to say, all the details such as tone of voice, mannerisms, accents, and gestures are up to them.

Sometimes all you have to do as an actor to secure a role is to suggest the image of the character that comes closest to what the showrunners had in mind.

Other times, you can wow them with surprising interpretations. Either way, you have to be sure that you can continue what you started once you get the part.

This is exactly what Supernatural 's Misha Collins didn't think through when he was working on Castiel in his head. At the time of his first contract, Collins had only signed on for a three-episode arc, so he thought he could keep up with the voice he'd given the character: very deep and powerful, appropriate for a borderline omnipotent being.

When Cas became so beloved and popular, and the audience clearly wasn't ready to let him go, Collins realized what a mistake he had made, but it was too late. With the character already established on screen, all the actor had to do was commit. And so he did.

The actor recalled the struggles that came with Castiel's voice in the season 8 DVD special features clip:

“I thought I should give him a really commanding, powerful voice – something I now regret because I've been doing it for six years and there are definitely times when I have to go home and drink hot lemon water and have a sore throat,” Collins said.

Fortunately, no permanent damage was done to the actor's vocal cords, as far as the audience knows. And the perks that Supernatural has given him are probably worth a few sore throats. From a viewer's point of view, it's almost impossible to imagine Castiel any other way.

If you want to indulge in nostalgia and re-watch Misha Collins' entire run as Supernatural's Castiel, you can stream the show on Netflix or MAX.
