Only one movie stands above Spider-Man now: Brand New Day passed Avengers: Endgame
Somewhere, a Disney executive is staring out a rain-streaked window.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day just edged past Avengers: Endgame on the all-time domestic box office chart — $858.4 million to $858.3 million — making Tom Holland's web-slinger the biggest Marvel movie in U.S. history and the second-biggest movie of any kind, ever, domestically.
Yes, the margin is $100,000. In box office terms that's a Tuesday matinee in Tulsa. It still counts. Records don't have a dignity requirement.
The rampage so far, itemized
This thing hasn't just been winning, it's been showing off:
- Biggest domestic opening weekend ever: $360 million, taking down Endgame's $357.1 million — a record people assumed was carved in granite
- Fastest movie to $800 million domestic: 19 days
- Second-fastest to $1 billion global, behind only Endgame itself
- Over $2.2 billion worldwide and four straight weekends at No. 1
When the opening record fell, Sony film chief Tom Rothman crowed "Records are made to be broken," adding the studio would take pride in this one for as long as they hold it. Sir, at this rate you'll hold it until the sun burns out or Avengers: Secret Wars, whichever comes first.
The one movie still standing above Spider-Man domestically: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, sitting at $936.6 million like a final boss.
Can it take the last throne?
Brand New Day is about $78 million short of The Force Awakens and still pulling millions on random Mondays, so "no" is not a safe answer. Meanwhile Disney — and I am quite sure this is a coincidence — is re-releasing Endgame as Avengers: Endgame: Encore on September 25, presumably to claw its number back like an ex texting "you up?"
