An unexpected comeback from season 2 was a major shocker in The Gilded Age’s latest episode, but the show’s fans were hoping this would happen. Here’s everything to know about Maud Beaton in case you need a session 2 recap.

Things have swirled even more dramatically in The Gilded Ages season 3 episode 5 where Larry Russell and Jack Trotter’s big celebration was interrupted by a shocking comeback — and a plot twist not less shocking.

The show’s most recent episode follows Russell and Trotter as they decide to mark their good business news with a little party at the Haymarket, but the celebration ends when Larry suddenly recognises Maud Beaton in one of the prostitutes there.

He then becomes all the way more confused about everything that’s happening as Maud denies that she’s actually named Maud.

The Gilded Age’s ongoing season 3 is yet to dive deeper into the story of one of its most controversial characters, and it seems like fans have been ready for it for quite a long time.

Who Is Maud Beaton in ‘The Gilded Age’?

The character is initially introduced in the show’s second season as a charming socialite with a lot of potential, which immediately took all the attention of Oscar van Rhijn, one of The Gilded Age’s most prominent bachelors.

As they get to know each other better, Maud reveals she’s invested a large sum of money in a business scheme proposed by mysterious Mr. Crowther.

This, adding up to the fact that Maud is also rumoured to be Jay Gould’s illegitimate daughter, convinces Oscar to follow the suit, with him eventually falling in love with Maud as well.

However, right at the time when Oscar is getting ready to propose to Maud, he finds out that the entire thing was nothing but a fraud, also realising that he’s lost all of his and his mother’s money.

Now that Maud is back, The Gilded Age is yet to reveal what exactly happened to the character and what brought her back.

‘The Gilded Age’ Fans Wanted Maud Beaton Back So Bad

Since Maud was long thought to have escaped and settled down somewhere with all of the van Rhijn money, it’s pretty shocking to see her working as a prostitute at the Haymarket; however, the show’s fans were long convinced that the character’s story in season 2 was far from over.

“I know they made it clear the money and Maud are “gone,” but I’m hoping somehow someone runs into her, or sees her out somewhere if she comes back to NY, or if someone travels somewhere else where she might be”, Redditor etiquettebitch5 wrote in a discussion thread.

“I know there’s zero chance of this happening, but I kind of want Oscar to catch up with her and join her in fleecing people”, MrsRojoCaliente added.

“I don't see her coming back, but maybe Oscar is being haunted by her by always getting glimpses of her only to have her disappear, or people telling him they have seen her somewhere only for him to just miss her”, Quirky_Butterfly_946 suggested.

When Will ‘The Gilded Age’ Next Episode Be Released?

The show’s season 3 episode 6 will arrive on HBO Max on July 27.
