Heads up fans of Our Flag Means Death, a massive potential spoiler has just been unleashed.

It came via Instagram of all places, where stars Kristian Nairn, Samba Schutte, and Rhys Darby held a Q&A session with fans. It started innocently enough, however, things took a swift turn when a fan asked them to describe what season two would be like in three words…

Schutte chose to say, "bigger" and "epic," while Nairn opted for "extra," and Darby's contribution was "complex." But then Schutte added one word that changed the entire mood of the day. That word was "heartbreaking."

It prompted what appeared to be a surprised reaction from both of his co-stars, and needless to say, it had fans wanting to jump out of their seats in anxiety. Heartbreaking clearly implies someone fans love is going to die, right? But, does that fit the formula of what we know and love from this show? Let's consider this question by looking a little closer at the show.

Our Flag Means Death is a stand-out series for several reasons. Firstly, its diversity. It is not a show that pretends to be diverse or tries to throw in as much diversity as possible to the point where it no longer makes sense, just for the sake of being woke. It embraces diversity and uses it to help move the story forward and make its characters even more relatable and interesting.

Secondly, it Is genuinely funny. It is cleverly written and crafted and so expertly performed, that the laughs come naturally without feeling forced. The characters are so gloriously crafted, the humour that is generated from them just flows and makes it so inherently watchable.

Thirdly, it is full of surprises. Nobody expected the infamous pirate Blackbeard and the mid-life crisis-suffering, gentlemanly, Stede Bonnet, to fall in love. And the light nature of the show meant every death so far has been something of a surprise. But have any of these "shock" deaths been heartbreaking? It really depends on who you ask.

Fans of Lucius were very upset to see him (supposedly) meet his end in the season one finale and are hoping he will return in season two.

And lastly, it is now a show that relies only on laughs to draw its audience. There is real heart here. It is easy to get on board with the characters and feel what they are going through. The break-up at the end of the first season was awful, albeit peppered with humorous moments to break the tension a little. But it was still felt deeply by viewers.

Schutte was responsive to the concerns expressed by fans during the Instagram session and after being swamped with more probing questions and comments, he seemed to backtrack on his "heartbreaking" comment somewhat, clarifying by stating:

"By 'heartbreaking,' I just mean there's so many sweet moments… it's not what you think!"

Is it what fans think and did Schutte make an error by blurting out the word? Or did he really just misspeak and mean sweet instead? Only time will tell. But either way, Our Flag Means Death fans, we suggest having tissues handy for season two.
