The king of horror boasts of more than 100 adaptations of all kinds, and filmmakers are holding a record so far.
Stephen King is arguably one of the most influential authors of all time, coming in second on the list of the most adapted writers after William Shakespeare.
Even though not all of them were an immediate success (or just success at all), a big part of King’s adaptations received all praise possible, with titles like Shawshank Redemption, Carrie, It, The Green Mile and many others becoming an instant cult classic.
The writer’s audiovisual portfolio, however, isn’t limited to movies only, yet this format remains the most frequent choice when it comes to bringing yet another one of King’s stories to life.
How Many Movies Are Based on Stephen King’s Novels?
So far, there are around 55 movies that are considered adaptations of Stephen King’s books, including some films that haven’t been released yet.
Despite not seeming that big at first, this is still a solid number that no one of other modern writers has so far come close to.
Apart from the movies, which also include several adaptations of the same novel, King’s collection also boasts of various TV shows and miniseries, making it to the total number of around 100 adaptations of all kinds.
How Many Stephen King Movies Were Nominated for an Oscar?
Despite many of those receiving numerous accolades and raving reviews, only five movies based on Stephen King’s novels also received a nod or two from the Academy.
In fact, the author’s career in the industry had a pretty good start with his first ever adaptation, 1976’s Carrie, getting two Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, but not winning any.
Later, in 1985, a coming-of-age drama Stand by Me also got a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, but didn’t win.
There was more success with 1990’s Misery that brought its leading actress Kathy Bates her first and so far the only Oscar.
Five years later Frank Darabont’s first King adaptation The Shawshank Redemption received a whopping seven Academy Award nominations, though didn’t win in any category.
Finally, Darabont’s second collaboration with Stephen King, 1999’s The Green Mile, secured four Oscar nods, including for Michael Clarke Duncan in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category, also not winning a single award.
