Amazon Prime’s Overcompensating dropped its first season just recently, but the talks about another chapter are already spinning. Here’s what is known about the show’s renewal status now.

May 15 was the day that fans were introduced to the chaotic journey of Benny from Overcompensating. The show has 8 episodes, and it was enough to create a huge fandom already.

Benito Skinner, the creator and lead star of Overcompensating, is better known as a social media star. He has almost three million followers on TikTok and a large fan base in other areas, including music. And now, he has won over the world of TV.

Will There Be Season 2 of ‘Overcompensating’?

As of now, Prime Video hasn’t officially greenlit a second season. However, that hasn’t stopped speculation, and given the show’s positive reception, with a 94% rating from critics and an 83% rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, a second season sounds like a matter of time.

What Was ‘Overcompensating’ Season 1 About?

Benny is a young man who has enrolled at Yates University and is figuring out how to survive college life. Years earlier, when he was in high school, Benny was a successful football player.

However, he is also a closeted gay, and even though he is in college, he is too worried to come out. So he becomes friends with Carmen and tries to make her his girlfriend, which causes a lot of funny trouble.

The self-aware comedy changes in shifts close to the finale, when Carmen betrayed Benny after he confided in her about his crush on Miles, only to catch her kissing him. So she outed Benny, leaving him be.

What Can Season 2 Focus On?

Since the show ended on a cliffhanger, there is a lot to explore in the new season, if there is one. The scene in which Carmen exposes Benny makes it clear that they all have completely different understandings of what is secret and sacred, and what having boundaries even mean. Diving into the aftermath of the scene would be an obvious next step.

With Skinner’s clear creative vision, there’s so much more to explore, and not just with Benny, but with the dysfunctional and sometimes painfully honest ensemble that surrounds him.

“I think I know what I want to do and there’s so much more we wanna say. There will be backslide, and that’s what that finale is. This journey of becoming yourself and overcompensating, it’s a rollercoaster and at times I think college can be so selfish and you can be like, it’s every man for himself. It’s drugs and alcohol and feelings and we didn’t want to stray from that, and we want to continue it,” Skinner told Variety.
