Ellen Pompeo's former co-star, Patrick Dempsey, has his own hilarious theory as to why Meredith Grey is leaving her position as Chief of General Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

The mid-season finale of Season 19, titled "Thunderstruck," was all about Meredith Grey moving to Boston to research Alzheimer's disease.

The episode, which aired on November 10, was officially Ellen Pompeo's last. Residents at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and Grey's Anatomy fans alike said goodbye to Meredith Grey, who has been the star of the ABC medical drama since its first season.

While Meredith shared heartwarming farewell scenes with her colleagues and friends, Ellen Pompeo bid farewell to her legion of fans via social media. The actress expressed her love and gratitude to all of her fans and promised that viewers will continue to see her on Grey's Anatomy.

Ellen Pompeo has been hinting at leaving the show for some time now. However, she will not completely part ways with Grey's Anatomy. The actress remains an executive producer of the ABC drama and will occasionally appear as a guest star in some episodes. The storyline certainly gives her that opportunity. The exit gives Pompeo time and energy to work on other projects, one of which is an adaptation of 2009's Orphan, a horror film that tells the story of an adopted girl who hides a terrible secret.

Ellen Pompeo might have left the show to work on other projects, but her former co-star Patrick Dempsey, who played Dr. Derek Shepherd, has a much more exciting explanation for her exit. On Jimmy Kimmel Live! , the host raised the issue of Ellen Pompeo exiting Grey's Anatomy jokingly saying, "I don't know if you heard, she got caught stealing Band-Aids from the set." Patrick Dempsey didn't hesitate to reply and went even further.

"Did she really? Finally, they caught her. Can you imagine what she'd have in her house now from 19 seasons? A full hospital."

This hilarious exchange was really funny and touching for all the Grey's Anatomy fans who still miss Derek Shepherd after he died in a car accident 8 seasons ago. The majority of the show's fans think Dr. McDreamy was the best partner for Meredith and still drool over their pairing. Jimmy Kimmel and Patrick Dempsey discussed how Grey's Anatomy's fan base is getting younger and even teenagers born after the show premiered in 2005 find Dr. Shepherd, well, dreamy.
