Perfect GoT Moment That Almost Redeems That Disaster of a Season 8
The incessant negativity surrounding season 8 of Game of Thrones could easily lead you to believe that there was nothing good about it.
It's fair to say the consensus of opinion among fans is that the final season failed to deliver on a lot of what built up to it – and this is largely seen as a result of rushing things and not resolving the myriad intertwining plotlines that made the show so damn good in the first place.
But among some of the questionable writing, there were also some moments that delivered on expectations. The problem was they got lost among everything the series didn't give us.
So, let's take a look at a few of them:
Theon Greyjoy had a torrid time throughout the series, especially during his period of captivity in season 3. His was a story of a boy neglected by his family and desperate to gain their approval and his own sense of self-esteem at almost any cost. Yes, he did some terrible things, but he was a victim himself. By dying a hero, he finally achieved what he'd wanted from life.
Likewise, Gendry Baratheon – a good man who didn't ask to be dragged into this war – was raised to a position of power and respect befitting of his demeanour.
There were some funny moments too. How Sam wasn't killed after being overrun by White Walkers was never really explained. But then how Sam got through his first day's training, let alone the rest of his time in the Night's Watch is a mystery really.
Then there was Podrick singing. A tender moment that came just at the right time, not just for those sitting around him expecting to die imminently, but for viewers, who were treated to a scene that wouldn't have been out of place if it had been part of GoT at its peak.
But surely the best moment of the entire season – the one that almost redeems the disaster that was season 8, has to be Brienne being knighted. What was not to love about this scene? In her actions, her honour, and her fighting prowess, Brienne had effectively been a knight since the moment she appeared in the show.
Her initial wry smile when told to kneel by Jaime was soon replaced with a look of both surprise and pride as she realised what was actually about to happen. It was a moment of fulfilment for a character that had proved herself worthy of the title time and time again, but who would never have imagined it would happen.
Sure, season 8 of Game of Thrones was, on the whole, a letdown. But it did have some great moments that are worth watching again.
