Peter Jackson Gives a Major Update on His New Movies: “Certainly Not Retired”
It’s been more than ten years without new movies from The Lord of the Rings’ director, but Jackson might be returning with a new project sooner than you think — here’s what he said.
The Lord of the Rings’ helmer Peter Jackson isn’t done yet with the movie industry, and it seems like there can be some great news for his franchise based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s vast universe.
Having developed six movies for The Lord of the Rings series, Jackson last worked on The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies back in 2014, also coming on board for a 2024 anime fantasy movie The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim as an executive producer.
Since then, however, nothing has been heard about Jackson being attached to something new released in the upcoming years; the director’s own update has just proved it all wrong.

Even though fans have been worried about Jackson who might have quietly gone into retirement more than a decade ago, there was nothing to worry about — instead, the director has been quietly working on several projects at a time, with one of those slated for a release in 2027.
“I'm certainly not retired. We are currently working on three different screenplays. I'm at the moment writing three different scripts”, Jackson revealed in a recent interview with ScreenRant.
The director also added that he was booked and busy developing The Hunt for Gollum which will start its production sometime next year, with Andy Serkis helming the upcoming movie.
“I've enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I've grown old or not, and obviously the Get Back The Beatles project. I've enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that'll probably carry on”, Jackson said.
Will Peter Jackson Ever Direct a New Movie?
Despite the director reassuring his fans that he’s still around working on multiple movies, it’s not really clear whether he will direct one of those or any of the future projects.
So far, the director stated that he would be producing Serkis’ The Hunt for Gollum, possibly retaining the same position for the rest of the movies in development.
If this turns out to be true anytime soon, Jackson’s fans will have to endure yet another long wait before The Lord of the Rings’ helmer will come back to directing.
In the meantime, The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled for a release sometime in 2027.
