Peter Krause's Line of Fire: NBC premiere date and what to know about the drama pitched as "Scandal meets Six Feet Under"
A man who spent five seasons in a funeral home is back on network TV, and the pitch involves his old address.
Peter Krause is returning to television on Monday, September 21, and the circumstances are, frankly, delicious. Line of Fire premieres at 10/9c on NBC (streaming next day on Peacock), sliding into the post-Voice slot like it owns the place.
It's his first series regular gig since 9-1-1 unceremoniously killed off Bobby Nash in a lab accident and left an entire fandom in mourning-slash-denial. Grief timeline: one year. Recovery method: joining a fictional family with even more guns.
The premise, which is A Lot
The Hollingsworths are a family in which every single member works for a different federal protective agency. Dad Mike (Krause) is Secret Service. Mom Jane (Hope Davis, a gift) is a U.S. Marshal. The three adult kids are scattered across the FBI, the DOJ, and — like father, like son — the Secret Service. Thanksgiving at this house is presumably five people refusing to discuss classified material over a turkey.
Then a routine case curdles into a deadly conspiracy, someone starts hunting government agents, one of the family is in the crosshairs, and the Hollingsworths have to decide how much of their sworn code they're willing to shred to protect their own. Krause's character sums up the mission statement in the trailer: get to him before "they" do. Who is "they"? That's the show, babe.
The "Scandal meets Six Feet Under" of it
Executive producer Jenna Bush Hager — yes, that one, and yes, this is partly inspired by her actual childhood of being trailed by the Secret Service — described the show as a cross between "Scandal and Six Feet Under," which is objectively the funniest possible logline to hand Peter Krause. The man was Six Feet Under. He ran the funeral home. Casting him in a show pitched with his own résumé is either a galaxy-brain compliment or the laziest mood board in Burbank, and I respect it either way.
The details worth knowing before Monday:
- Creator: Joshua Safran, the man behind Quantico and Gossip Girl, so expect twists administered intravenously.
- Cast: Krause, Davis, Kat Cunning, Tommy O'Brien, Taylor Bloom, and Charlie Barnett.
- Guest stars: Sam Waterston, Chris Chalk, and Campbell Scott, because NBC decided to show off.
- Season 1: ten episodes, Mondays, with next-day streaming on Peacock.
Network procedural? Technically. But it's a network procedural where the family drama is the case, everyone's badge outranks everyone else's feelings, and Hope Davis gets to glower in federal lighting. I know what I'm doing Monday night.
