A gritty heist, a new Parker, and plenty at stake.

Curiosity about cinematic comebacks led me straight to the trailer for Shane Black’s Play Dirty. After seven years away, Black returns with a Prime Video thriller set for 1 October.

Mark Wahlberg now steps into Parker — a role once meant for Robert Downey Jr. That lost reunion stings a little, but at least Black is back in the game.

A Heist With History

The story follows Parker, a thief eyeing one audacious score against a dictator, the New York mob and even the world’s richest man. By his side is Grofield, a con artist played by LaKeith Stanfield.

The cast also includes Rosa Salazar, Dermot Mulroney, Tony Shalhoub and Keegan-Michael Key. Parker’s no stranger to cinema — he first appeared in Donald E. Westlake’s 1962 novel The Hunter and has inspired films from Point Blank to Payback. Isn’t it time he reclaimed the spotlight?

Shane Black’s Return

For Black, this feels like a true reset after the troubled Predator in 2018. Here he works with Matthew Libatique on cinematography, Alan Silvestri on score, and co-writers Charles Mondry and Anthony Bagarozzi. Black’s pulp instincts gave us Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys — proof he thrives on wisecracks and wounded antiheroes.

So, the trailer is here, the release date fixed, and anticipation is high. Whether Wahlberg makes Parker his own is the question.
