Intense, strange, and very A24 — and it’s still unreleased.

Anne Hathaway has described her role in Mother Mary, the upcoming A24 film from director David Lowery, as the most challenging and unusual of her career — and she’s not alone in that view. In a recent Vogue profile, the Oscar winner opened up about the surreal, emotionally raw production, calling the experience "confusing," "transformational," and, at times, so overwhelming that cast and crew felt "temporarily, mildly insane."

The film stars Hathaway as a pop icon — somewhere between Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift — who abandons a tour and reconnects with a fashion designer played by Michaela Coel. Most of the story reportedly takes place in a 13th-century barn in Germany, where Hathaway performed an intense dance sequence that left the crew in tears. The songs weren’t even finished when shooting began — a fact Hathaway says forced her to let go of control and "submit to being a beginner." Not exactly your typical musical.

Still, while the ambition behind Mother Mary is clear, the finished product remains a mystery. It hasn’t been released, there’s no trailer, and — as Reddit user Dull-Plate7064 pointed out"it's extremely weird that we are almost in July and we have nothing about that movie yet."

Even Lowery himself recently called it a "bewildering mess" in the editing room, leading another Redditor (Personal_Channel1628) to note, "When the director is making comments like this, it's not too encouraging."

Whether it turns out to be a misunderstood masterpiece or a chaotic experiment in arthouse excess, Mother Mary has certainly earned its place as one of the strangest unreleased films on the horizon. Then again, with A24 behind it — and Hathaway fully committed — maybe that’s exactly the point.
