"Proper Spider-Man": Kevin Feige Teases The Punisher's Role in 'Brand New Day'

Viewers can expect a darker, more mature Peter Parker and one of the most intense confrontations in Spider-Man history. Here's what Kevin Feige has to say about the Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige offered the first detailed preview of the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, confirming that we will finally see Tom Holland as the "proper" Peter Parker.
Feige mentioned that the new movie will be a turning point for the character and discussed Jon Bernthal's role as the Punisher in Brand New Day.
'Brand New Day' Will Give Us a "Proper" Spider-Man
Although Tom Holland has already played Spider-Man six times, Feige believes that the character will finally find his true essence now. In an interview with ScreenRant, the producer shared:
“We are seeing for the first time in the Tom Holland Spider-Man stories, him being a proper Spider-Man, him being by himself dedicated to saving the city beyond and dealing with, for lack of a better term, street level crime as opposed to world ending events that he faced.”
This depiction of the hero is a tribute to early comic books – in those stories, Peter balanced his personal life with fighting criminals instead of participating in global conflicts.
Kevin Feige Hints at Spider-Man vs. The Punisher Confrontation
But what's even more interesting is the potential confrontation between Spider-Man and the Punisher. As Feige noted, Frank Castle first appeared in the comics as Spider-Man's antagonist.
In the MCU, their conflict could become even more intense, given that Bernthal has already proven himself in the role. Feige said:
“Who are the other street level characters that we've never seen him interact with? And of course I know The Punisher started in a Spider-Man comic and that great cover, I don't want to say too much, but I won't say too much.”
According to Feige, director of Brand New Day Destin Daniel Cretton is studying the original comics. This gives hope that the confrontation between Spider-Man and the Punisher will remain true to the spirit of the classic stories, both visually and in terms of the narrative.
The Punisher's Appearance Could Open the Door to Other Characters
One of the biggest criticisms of Tom Holland's trilogy was Spider-Man's heavy reliance on other superheroes, particularly Iron Man. No Way Home deliberately broke that connection – Peter is no longer Stark's protégé but rather a standalone hero who must rely only on himself.
Feige has emphasized that Brand New Day will focus on street-level characters, so it's safe to assume that the door will open for other similar characters to appear – not just the Punisher, but also Daredevil or also Kingpin.
