Never in a million years could I imagine Tarantino defending a feel-good workplace comedy, but here we are.

Tarantino is known for his strong opinions. When it comes to movies, he won't hold back and he'll tell us exactly how it is. Sure, occasionally some takes come off as odd to the point that even fans start questioning his choices. But who else can we turn to when we want genuine, unfiltered opinions?

In an interview to Metro, the director expressed his frustration about The Intern (2015) getting completely ignored by the Academy. He said:

“They’re not considering that for the Oscars even though I think Robert De Niro gave one of the best performances this year in that movie. I thought the script was actually one of her [Nancy Meyers] best. Right up there with It’s Complicated.”

The Intern: Inside a Movie That Tarantino Gave His Highest Praise To

The Intern tells the story of Ben (Robert De Niro), a 70-year-old widower who discovers that retirement isn't quite the paradise he imagined. When he lands a position as a senior intern at a fashion company, he finds a new way of living.

Jules (Anne Hathaway ), the CEO, initially dismisses Ben. But as time goes on, these two develop an unexpected friendship that changes both of their lives.

Besides De Niro, I liked how Nancy Meyers handled Hathaway's character. In an interview to Cup of Jo, Meyers said:

“Hollywood has trained audiences to think, the woman boss is a b–. We had to undo that wherever we could. It was an interesting dilemma to make her user friendly.”

What Do Fans Think of The Intern?

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, The Intern has 60% from critics and 73% from the audience.
  • On IMDb, The Intern is rated 7.1/10.

“This was one of the most charming movies I've seen this year. Everyone in this film was extremely likable. I echo Jeremy Jahns's sentiment that I really appreciate that there was zero romance between De Niro and Hathaway,” Redditor leroyderpins wrote.

“This is the kind of movie you can rewatch while it's raining, laying in bed going in and out of sleep on a lazy Sunday. It's comforting,” Redditor Ill_Mango7479 shared.

Tarantino Has Alway Been a Huge Fan of Robert De Niro

Tarantino has complimented De Niro long before The Intern was even in the works. During an interview with Charlie Rose, Tarantino said:

“I've never seen an actor so completely consume himself in character, in true character work, during the work. And what I mean by that is when Robert is playing Louis [from Jackie Brown, 1997] and you're looking at every single solitary piece of footage you've ever shot on the man. Every single moment, he is Louis. He is working moment to moment.”

Where Can I Watch The Intern Right Now?
