Quentin Tarantino Explains Why Fincher Is Directing His Hollywood Follow-Up — and the Reason Surprised Me

The filmmaker made clear why Fincher directs the follow-up.
It’s hardly news anymore that David Fincher will direct the Netflix follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The film, The Adventures of Cliff Booth, brings Brad Pitt back as the laconic stuntman turned quiet hero.
But what interested me most was hearing what Quentin Tarantino himself thought of handing over his own creation — and now he has spoken.
Why Tarantino Stepped Aside
On The Church of Tarantino podcast, the director explained that he simply didn’t want his tenth and final film to be a sequel.
"I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked," he admitted.
For him, the last chapter must feel like uncharted territory. That need to risk the unknown is exactly what defines him, isn’t it?
Why Fincher Was the Choice
Tarantino also praised Fincher, even declaring: "I think me and David Fincher are the two best directors." The fact that Fincher wanted to take on his script, he said, showed a seriousness toward his work. Rarely do we hear one auteur credit another so plainly.
So we now have a fascinating balance: Tarantino stepping back, Fincher stepping in, and Cliff Booth stepping forward. One can only wonder what this unusual partnership will bring.
