What is the best movie of the last five years? According to Tarantino, it's the acclaimed film Pig, starring Nicolas Cage. Here's what the director thinks about it.

Late Show host Stephen Colbert once asked Nicolas Cage about his favorite movies in which he played the lead. Cage immediately named the drama Pig by Michael Sarnoski.

As it turns out, Quentin Tarantino is also a fan of the movie. Recalling Cage's unique career on the Video Archives podcast, Tarantino noted that the actor should be proud of Pig:

“In watching some of the Nic Cage stuff, the one that blew me away was that movie he did, Pig. That's one of the best of the last five years. That's one of the best movies I've seen in the last five years. [...] That guy who directed it did a killer job. He did a really, really terrific job.”

Rob is an unsociable man who has been living in the Oregon wilderness for many years. He searches the forest for truffles with his only friend, a specially trained pig, and sells them once a week to a visiting buyer named Amir, a young city dandy.

One day, strangers attack Rob, beat him up, and kidnap the pig. Now, Rob must remember his long-forgotten social skills and go to the city with Amir's help to visit old friends.

'Pig' Starts Off as a Violent Revenge Movie but Turns Into a Poignant Drama

The first twenty minutes of Pig are vaguely reminiscent of John Wick. However, after deceiving the viewer for a bit, writer and director Michael Sarnoski leaves the path of a revenge movie.

He begins a touching, sincere, and honest conversation about what remains when love dies, how to survive loss, and where to seek consolation. Pig is about the conflict between societal expectations and natural human inclinations, and about weakness.

Pig is one of the best roles of Nicolas Cage's career. Perhaps unintentionally, he reveals to the viewers his own trauma: like his character, he left the mainstream industry for independent cinema to stay true to himself, but became a loner in the process.

Rob's absurd obsession with a stolen pig reveals more tragedy than most big-budget movies about love and all thanks to Nic Cage's poignant, brilliant performance.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Pig'?

  • Pig has 97% from critics and 83% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the movie has a score of 6.9/10.

Where to Watch 'Pig'?

Pig is available to stream on Netflix.
