Although Death Proof has become a cult classic among the director's fans, who appreciate his courage and love of exploitation cinema, Tarantino himself is not fond of it. Here's what Quentin himself said.

Between the revenge duology Kill Bill and the excursion into an alternate history of World War II Inglourious Basterds, there was Death Proof.

Of all Quentin Tarantino's nine movies, this one probably received the most mixed reviews from critics and viewers.

Quentin Tarantino Names 'Death Proof' His Worst Movie

But do you know who else didn't like Death Proof? Tarantino himself. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter's Director Roundtable, Quentin admitted that it was the worst film he had ever made:

“Death Proof has got to be the worst movie I ever make. [...] So if that's the worst I ever get, I'm good. But I do think one of those out-of-touch, old, limp, flaccid-d**k movies costs you three good movies as far as your rating is concerned.”

Such emotional statements about Death Proof stemmed from a conversation about the fact that a director should know when to end his career to avoid becoming too out of touch with the times and ruining their filmography.

What Is 'Death Proof' About?

Three cheerleaders decide to have some fun and go to a local bar, unaware of what, or rather, who, is waiting for them there.

Stuntman Mike secretly watches them from his car. He loves fast driving and enjoys giving pretty girls a ride home. And Mike believes he can get away with even the most terrible accident.

'Death Proof' Might Be the Worst Tarantino Movie, but It's Better Than He Says

Death Proof was originally released as part of Grindhouse, a double feature co-written with Robert Rodriguez. It is a love letter to the grindhouse movies and low-budget exploitation films that the director watched as a teenager.

Although the director himself calls Death Proof his worst movie, the worst Tarantino film is still better than most. It is a satirical and unbridled film with one of the best endings in his filmography.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Death Proof'?

Empire critic Damon Wise gave Death Proof four out of five stars, saying:

“It won't please everybody, but Death Proof is a berserk and memorable thrill ride that, like Stuntman Mike, is way, way smarter than it looks.”

  • Death Proof has 67% from critics and 71% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the movie has a score of 7.0/10.
