"Read the comic book": Anthony Mackie's answer on Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday points to Nomad
Anthony Mackie had a very blunt answer about Chris Evans' Marvel comeback, and a 52-year-old comic book backs him up.
Is Chris Evans back as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday? According to the guy who currently holds the shield, absolutely not. Anthony Mackie, who has played Captain America since Sam Wilson took over the mantle, was asked that exact question by Variety after Marvel's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, 2026. He clarified that Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, not as Captain America, and then he got a little spicy about it:
"Don't be a nerd by trade, be a nerd by fact."

His point, which he then spelled out, is that in the comics, Steve Rogers becomes Nomad.
Nomad, for the nerds by trade
- He debuted in Captain America #180 in 1974, in a Steve Englehart storyline where Steve discovers that the villainous Secret Empire reaches all the way to the top of the US government.
- Steve quits being Captain America over it and adopts a new identity as "the man without a country."
- It didn't last long. He picked the shield back up a few issues later, after the man who replaced him as Cap was killed.
- MCU fans have been here before. The bearded, shield-less Steve of Avengers: Infinity War has been called "Nomad Cap" by fans for years.
Marvel's eight-year Nomad pitch
Mackie isn't guessing. Evans told Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con that Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito took him to dinner right after Endgame wrapped in 2018 and pitched him more movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad. He said no. Over the next eight years, he heard at least a dozen more pitches and said no to all of them, until his team told him Robert Downey Jr. was in talks with Marvel. His explanation for holding out that long:
"I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it."

Marvel spent eight years pitching Chris Evans on Nomad, and Anthony Mackie basically said the quiet part out loud in one Comic-Con interview.
The footage lines up with all of this. The first teaser, released in December 2025, showed Steve riding a motorcycle home to a farmhouse, wearing a wedding band, and holding a baby. The trailer Marvel released on July 20, 2026, ends with Steve reuniting with Chris Hemsworth's Thor and summoning Mjolnir, sporting the same kind of beard he had in Infinity War. Not everyone online has made peace with it. "Chris Evans isn't Cap anymore. That era ended," one fan wrote on X after Mackie's interview went around.
Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18, 2026, with Downey as Doctor Doom, and Avengers: Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027.
