The Supernatural prequel could definitely do better.

Despite The Winchesters providing a unique chance for the Supernatural fandom to return to the good old days and dive back into the beloved saving-people-hunting-things universe, it doesn't seem to work for the majority of fans.

With the show being six episodes into the story, it still fails to properly connect to the original universe and provide answers fans are looking for. Instead, it offers some "cringeworthy" writing and bad acting, according to fans.

And while many people still hope for it to get better (after all, there is a half of the season to follow), this hope is fading with every new episode.

Reddit critics point out that the "difference in quality between The Winchesters pilot vs. Supernatural is insane", and given that the original show had often been subject to similar criticism, it looks like The Winchesters' creative team failed to learn a lesson.

Other people, however, believe that the prequel was doomed from the beginning.

"There are many problems but the major one is that the reason Supernatural worked was not because of "the world". It was because of Sam and Dean (lets be honest, Jared and Jensen) and if they aren't in it then what is the point? I don't understand why Jensen and co don't understand that. Its like flogging a horse that should have been left to die a while back now," Redditor Mermayden said.

Besides, The Winchester appears to retcon the original show by changing the core of John and Mary's story. In Supernatural, John only began hunting after Mary died at the hands of Azazel. The prequel, however, wants fans to believe that it was Mary who actually introduced John to hunting — something that the fandom is still refusing to buy without a solid explanation.

Needless to say, no explanation has been given at this point, and fans are starting to doubt that the retcon will be explained at all.

Jensen Ackles, who portrays Dean Winchester, narrates the story and exec produces the show, has vowed that The Winchesters will stick to the canon, but so far, the story is too vague. The plot and the acting, meanwhile, does little to help fans get distracted from that.

The Winchesters airs on The CW on Tuesdays, with the first season only set to consist of 13 episodes as the network never ordered an extended season.
