'Resident Evil' and 4 Other Most Anticipated Movies to Wait for in the Fall of 2026

The era of summer blockbusters is over, long live the era of prestige dramas and future Oscar nominees.

Over the next three months, projects from the main competitions at Cannes and Venice, high-profile horror movies, and contenders for Best Picture of the Year will hit the big screen.

1. 'Verity'

Release Date: October 2, 2026

Author Lowen Ashleigh receives an offer she can't refuse – to finish the final chapter of Verity Crawford's cult novel series. Crawford died under mysterious circumstances. Along with Verity's widower, Jeremy, Lowen begins to unravel the mysteries surrounding the enigmatic author.

Verity is Amazon MGM's attempt to capitalize on the success of last year's The Housemaid. The thriller boasts a stellar cast and was written by Nick Antosca, who is known for the recent remake of Cape Fear.

2. 'Digger'

Release Date: October 2, 2026

Tom Cruise wants an Oscar, and Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose uncompromising direction worked wonders for Leonardo DiCaprio's awards streak, has volunteered to help the action star secure a golden statuette.

For his role in Digger, Cruise wore old-age makeup and learned to laugh at himself again. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but one thing is certain: Iñárritu has made a wicked satire about the powerful who cling to their billions even in the face of nuclear doom.

However, insiders report that the film's budget ballooned to an obscene $200 million, and Warner Bros. producers forced Iñárritu to cut nearly 40 minutes of footage.

3. 'Resident Evil'

Release Date: September 18, 2026

After the success of Weapons, Zack Cregger turned his attention to Resident Evil. However, the filmmaker has eschewed fan service – his movie will not feature Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Chris Redfield, or other familiar characters.

The main character is Bryan, an ordinary courier caught in the middle of a zombie outbreak in Raccoon City. Judging by the trailer and interviews with the director, fans can expect a brutal horror flick with tons of fake blood and original monster designs.

4. 'The Social Reckoning'

Release Date: October 9, 2026

No one wanted to make a sequel to The Social Network: Jesse Eisenberg turned down the chance to play Mark Zuckerberg again, and David Fincher was too busy cashing Netflix checks.

Ultimately, the sequel was directed by the original film's screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin. The Oscar winner cast Succession alum Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg and also cast Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, and comedian Bill Burr in supporting roles.

The Social Reckoning is based on a 2021 leak that forced Zuckerberg to fight for his company's name. Sorkin's sequel is sure to receive a few Oscar nominations.

5. 'Terrifier 4'

Release Date: October 2026

After a brief cameo in Scary Movie 6, Art the Clown returns to the big screen in the latest installment of the slasher franchise.

Director Damien Leone has officially admitted to trolling the genre. In the upcoming movie, Sienna will descend into biblical hell to save her sister from a maniacal clown.

While the director assures audiences that the fourth Terrifier will be the last, such a bold claim is hard to believe – the previous movie grossed $90 million at the box office against a budget of $2 million.
